Magic Forest - Remake (2009)

As a teenager in the 1970's, I did several long sequences. Some contained 50 or more drawings. Most of them were done with a ball point pen on continuous form computer paper that my dad would sometimes bring home. None of them ever had dialogue or backgrounds (See?? I had an aversion to these things even back then!!), so as I look at them now its sometimes hard to remember what was going on in my diseased adolescent mind. I never finished any of them; usually I dropped them when I got bored with them, or got to a point where I didn't know where else to take them.

Here we are 30+ years on and I still don't know where to take them.

Anyway, it wasn't at all unusual for me to incorporate elements from movies or television into these sequences... light sabers, cartoon characters, famous space ships, and other pop culture references all made their appearance.

Daphne was always a favorite icon of mine, so it probably isn't surprising that she appears in a lot of my old drawings. This fragment is a remake of one of the last long sequences that I did, called "Magic Forest". (Hey, with no backgrounds, these things could take place anywhere!) In it, a Daphne-like character and a male friend have gone into the woods to look for a missing friend... only to discover the woods are enchanted.

I needed a little break from the Curse story, and some of the old images in the original sequence just begged to be redone. The originals were all done in marker. Still, I tried to match the style as they were done at the time, while still bringing them up to date. I wasn't going for accuracy in the figures or shading (I hadn't when I originally drew them, either), so no Poser help was done for these. These were all done freehand from scratch in Manga Studio EX and colored/cell shaded in Painter.

The images appear in their correct order, but there are missing pictures that would have appeared between panels 1 and 2. The rest of the sequence that led up to this point, and all that followed is too embarrassing to post here.
