Description
Happy 2012! I hope you all are enjoying the New Year as much as I.Ok! The first piece I'm submitting on deviant in the new year. This is part of something I created a while back called the "Ego Series" [link]
Sort of based of Frank Millers "Dark Knight Returns" story from the late 80's
I thought I'd show Bruce Wayne in his late 40's though.
THought that instead of making him a womanizing billionaire, playboy I'd make him more of a ruthless, money hungry, asshole of a business man who treats everyone around him like complete crap. From the press that interviews him to the employees that work under him. Sort of Gordon Gekko if yah will. Now even though this isn't who Bruce is subconsciously, he knows that if he Acts this way he must look the part. So I chose to grease back his hair, 5 o clock his face, drape him in an expensive suit and give him a smile to fit his endless sarcasm. A look that if he slid on a cheaper pair of threads, could pass as the some of the gangsters he pummel as the Bat.
Who would think an asshole like this would risk his life every night to save Gotham from the real ones. Not too many I'm thinking.

You have some very compelling points! It'd be cool to see this as an alternate version of Batman!

Would be cool to see your version of DC as a film or something.

This is one of my favorite versions of Batman and Bruce Wayne. Let us face it, someone dressed up as a giant bat is not scary, what is really scary is someone who can literally break someones bones with their bare hands and meanwhile make the outfit actually look terrifying. Β

This one looks like Thomas Wayne from the animated movie Justice League: Flashpoint, minus the costume difference.

Bruce must be at the very least in his 40s by now.

For a character who has existed since the 1940's, I'd say he's juuuust a tad older...

True, but he never really seems to age past his 40s.

Awesome. It makes sense for Batman to be bigger later on in life. Look at any pro fighter for example.
In his 20's George Foreman was 220 pounds. In his 40's he was 260 pounds. You get bigger as you go along.

I always though BTAS Bruce was oddly wide... did some of this come from that?

No wonder the punks are afraid of him. He could steam roll them into the ground. That's f***ing terrifying!

I can't kick that damn idea now. Why won't Dick Grayson talk to Bruce? When did Gordon finally acknowledge he knows Bruce is Batman? How did he feel about not admitting it all those years after hinting that he knew in Year One? When did Selina Kyle hang up the whip and become a madam? Exactly what is Bruce's relationship with her? She's leaving him booty call messages, so they've clearly been doing the dirty boogie for a while now. What's Alfred been doing? He spent decades multi-tasking Bruce Wayne's double life, but now he just babysits a frustrated retired playboy with a drinking problem. Alfred spent his best years as the most capable and busiest butler in the world. He couldn't have just turned that off. Did he get find a girlfriend? Join a parcheesi club? Volunteer at a local hospital to keep up on discreetly treating blunt trauma, stabbings and gunshot wounds knowing that the Bat would overtake Bruce's personality again and call on his trusty butler to patch him up?
I really should stop this. "Before The Dark Knight Returns" is a terrible title.

then make an implication instead of full on using the name.
"the beginning of the end: before the dark Knight" just a thought. and i must admit you are answering very intriguing questions. i would love to see them answered. now about the photo!! i love the different version of bruce wayne the most. instead of him being a play boy which nowadays made me think more of tony stark then bruce wayne. this would honestly fit and be a very interesting contrast. i could see the media thinking and trying to investigate if bruce and wayne industries have some criminal implications. thinking he may have ties to the mob. while every night he goes and fights against what they think he is a part of.

You've got me seriously hooked on your Ego line. I had to post again.
I'm a huge of Miller's Dark Knight Returns Batman. Miller designed that version to be a force of nature, just like this guy. Granted, his size is vastly exaggerated, but it's that expressive quality that I love about comic books! He's the opposite of your Spider-Man, but they could easily appear on the same page and look ... right, I guess. The exact word eludes me.
These designs makes me think of what Bruce/Bats would've been like right before he hung up the cowl. Bruce is a little happier and has the unique sarcasm of the kind of person who has an insider's knowledge of keeping the biggest secret in the world, and he's a little satisfied because he's been winning his war on crime. Bats is still dark and scary (picture your average criminal running into anyone in tights in a dark alley and they'll be scared because this person is clearly crazy, but picture a guy THAT SIZE in tights in a dark alley and the bowel movements are on the way!) but still has that hint of confidence/arrogance of a guy who's kicked your ass in his mind before he even gets his mitts on you.
The costume is still in keeping with the iconic classic with a few cool flourishes (I dig the bat-boots) and the faded bat emblem makes the costume feel a little used and lived in.
Somebody at DC should let you do an Elseworlds book with this. What could possibly be Bruce's final mission as Batman that made him feel he'd won his War on Crime, laid his parents to rest, brought permanent safety to Gotham and could finally enjoy his life? Who is the Bruce/Batman of that period in his life? And -- what I think is most interesting of all -- what's left unresolved that will eventually lead us to the 55-year-old Bruce Wayne chasing death in a race car and getting soused in Wayne Manor at the opening of Dark Knight Returns?
Probably sounds a little too much like "Before Watchmen" now that I read that, but those two designs of yours made me ask all those questions in the space of a few minutes. And that, sir, means damn good design.
Also, DC never told Miller that he'd own Batman so you wouldn't get as much backlash. Hey-O!

Can I make a request? I'm going to anyway.
My favourite character from the Justice League cartoons was always the Martian Manhunter. Maybe you could do something about him and his alter ego? Pretty please?

Interesting take, but if Bruce is such a hatable character⦠why should we care about him? Why should we care if he's going outside to fight the bad guys if he's just as much of a bully as they are?
