Description
I've always loved that Darth Vaders outfit was inspired by Samurai gear. I thought I'd play with his original design and incorporate some of that samurai shit along with some stuff I just had fun popping in there. Had a dandy playing with this piece a little lot.tools> pscs4, wacom cintiq

So this is how Darth Vader would look if he were in Medieval Japan.
Neat.

How'd you do the texture? Did you just draw the hexagons over and over again? Or was it from a photo or something?

It was really small 72 dpi pattern that I duplicated and sharpened in photoshop. I then selected the hexagons and added some highlight on them where the pronounced parts of Vader were.

His shoulder piece was more or less a lift from samurai armor. As for the head, I've been told that the lead costume designer used the idea of combining a WWII German infantry helmet with a human skull as the metaphorical reach for conveying fear & death.

I always thought that his mask was partly inspired by Doctor Doom...
Oh well. Awesome!

I think that more to the point, both vader's and docter-doom's masks where inspired by the human skull, defined strong jaws, large gaping eye sockets, and in vaders case, a large triangle nose hole.

"Darth Vaders outfit was inspired by Samurai gear" This was the starting point for the designer of Vader's outfit, and it's documented. That doesn't mean that there are not similarities to Doom or the human skull, but these were not the original inspiration ...

Im sorry, but your wrong on that one. Vader's outfit isn't based upon samurai gear, that's an exaggeration myth based on truth. And the skull like shape was on purpose btw.
In the original brief, Vader was to be dressed all in black cloth and have a robe around his head, (like the imperial guards do.)
Ralph McQuarrie, didn't think that robes where defined or aggressive enough for Vader, so he started to incorporate the padded style armour and robes of the Saudi Arabian 'Bedouin Warriors'.
The mask was developed instead of the head scarf because in the original script the storm troopers and Vader fly through empty space to get to leia's ship. And he would need to be able to breath.
The first draft of the helmet came from a none related bust drawing McQuarrie had made of a gargoyle type monster. The large eyes and jaws where created to make it appear more military and skeleton like. Then comes the samurai part, which is only to-do with the helmet cap piece, giving it the descending point in the middle fringe, and larger widening at the bottom as it gets lower.
The Base of McQuarrie's design however is heavily based upon/plagiarized from the character 'The Lightning' in 'The Fighting Devil Dogs.' Looking almost identical.

Just so that you now know...
Sorry for going off topic, kizer180. Just thought I would clarify those corrections to MasterOfPointillism's comment...

[link] or read some SW books that document the concept art ... don't just guess or have hunches about similarities. After all, Star Wars was based on an Akira Kurosawa film 'The Hidden Fortress' ...

I didn't state anything on hunch, and how naive of you to just assume that I did. Also what I told you, I read from the official Star Wars website and from books. But obviously an anonymous article on 'Quazen'... Is more factual.
Haha, and not only that, but that article even agrees with my original point!
- "What adds more to the powerful look was that the Darth Vader mask was made to resemble a skull." (nice grammar up there too..)
Now, I'm not going to waste any-more of my time, or kizer180's thread. talking to a "self-proclaimed genius" like yourself.
Please do not bother to reply, I shan't read it. But if it will make your ego feel better, be my guest.
Goodbye.
(kizer180, sorry again for the mess.)

"It appears that McQuarrie began such sketches while Lucas was in the midst of writing the second draft, because the character is described in that script as wearing the respirator mask that McQuarrie first sketched here. Following this, McQuarrie made a number of alterations at Lucas' request. The robes became more exaggerated, and the character was requested to have a wide-brimmed samurai helmet, which McQuarrie combined with his respirator to create a fearsome face-mask which completely obscured the character's face." -[link]

i'd say yes, given that the original was an awful 70s design with a bucket helmet.

I agree, this is a far more dramatic & dynamic outfit. Would also explain why he is so damn slow in the film! This guy wouldn't need to run anywhere. The textures also look more technologicly appropriate than the first one, he would need some more buttons and gizmos though I think.
