Description
Note the skull motif. Noted? Good. On with the show.EDIT: Not even top 25. Great try.
So much work went into the conceptualization and realization of this painting. Just wow. There are about a million sweet paintings that have been submitted, so good luck to all my competition!
Hand-painted, no reference used. I did apply some light phototextures for density, which were painted over. Personal stocks, not commercial material. Nonetheless, it's invisible in the final.

Well Elucidator, ive looked and thought hard about all the semi-finalists but congrats yours is the only one apart from 2 that i find original and not copied off the game artwork and correctly portray Lara's predicament

What a compliment! Though, I think that giving her a pistol instead of a bow really hurt my chances of being selected... And I probably didn't spend enough time polishing, either. Ah well, haha.
Thank-you very much!

Is she checking his pulse? He kind of looks long gone to me. I like the colours that you've used.

From a distance the whole image seems like IronMan Mask

Damnit. So close, but so far. Iron Man is cool too, hahahaha.
(It's supposed to be a skull.)

Good jobbers. I couldn't help but notice the outline of the cave entrance. Very clever.

Ooh I knew this was going to be amazing when I saw your little sneak peak. I absolutely adore how you included the skull without it being too harsh. Subtle. Very subtle. I also admire how you took the time to actually make Lara look like the Lara from the game c:
I honestly believe that you have a very, very good chance in this contest. And I have seen a lot of the entries. All the best to you!
Just one teeny tiny thing, however. She's holding a pistol, but there are arrows in the corpse? perhaps it's just not her kill(?)

Thank-you so much! I really, really like that you like it And I'm also glad it came out looking like Lara, because that was a bit of a shot in the dark, haha.
Also, it's not her kill That's why she's so concerned / distraught / checking his pulse!

I really like this! Do you use art in a profession or is this a hobby you're really good at?

Thank-you! Glad you like it!
Some of both. I'm 19 and I've loved to draw for as long as I can remember. You could say it's just a hobby that I occasionally get paid for. I haven't been to school for it, and I'm definitely still learning. But I do take commissions. I'm a semi-professional hobbyist, intending to go full-pro eventually. Haha.

Well, for being self-taught that's even more amazing! I hope nothing puts you off doing what you like (i didn't take art any further when an art teacher tried to make me draw a rusty bike for weeks...), you could definitely go pro in future!
All the best! x

Lovely lighting once again mister! Question: why do you never use references? I'm just curious, because a lot of people heavily rely on them.

Thank-you!
I use references sometimes, especially when doing studies. I also use lots of vague reference, for instance, I looked at dozens of pictures of shoulders and collarbones, as well as many pictures of Lara herself, pictures of forests, etc.. So I used other photos to get into the right mindset, but I hate having something in an original painting that's dictated by a reference. For instance, if I found a pose reference for Lara and I copied it, would it really be my creation? So I'm not against the use of reference, I just enjoy the creativity and challenge of using my imagination. As you may know, I come from a traditional background of direct reference. I have good skills as a photocopier but poor skills of imagination. So I'm trying to fix that!

justkeepdrawing In reply to CorbinHunter [2013-03-22 07:41:34 +0000 UTC]
That makes sense yeah. So instead of copying ONE picture completely you make sure you get a good understanding of how for example a shoulder really works before you start drawing it? That is actually what I thought referencing meant, so that's where my confusion came from, heh. Too bad you didn't get through to the finals, but hey, more contests will come. :3
By the way, how's your Gnomon adventure going?

CorbinHunter In reply to justkeepdrawing [2013-03-22 16:24:19 +0000 UTC]
Terminology is sketchy, haha. Most people use "reference" to mean "copy", and I wanted to clarify that I don't do that, but yes, I pose in the mirror, google pictures of supermodels, and do whatever I can to understand what I'm painting. Then I shut down all my reference so I'm not drawing too much on any specific picture and I let imagination take over. Use reference that way!!
Yeah, I'm not sire I'll enter another dA contest after the results of this one. I'm very perplexed by the selections of the dA team, and I'm not sure that I should bother putting the effort in next time.
As you probably know, Gnomon didn't work out for me. The border guards were not well-versed and decided not to let me in to the USA, despite me gathering significant evidence to support my legal correctness. I am no longer aiming to attend school. Instead, I plan to study all on my own.
