Well, I haven't perfected the art yet, but I like to pretend I'm a computer and do "render passes" like in 3D CG.
My first mental pass is the "matte" or diffuse pass, that's just placing the basic colors around to form the silhouette of the zergling. Then I clearly define the "key" light source somewhere (in this case, the sun coming in from the right) and darken areas obscured by this imaginary light, and highlight where it shines. Then, like in CG, you wanna apply surface texture or "shaders" to really give the object gritty detail. This includes self-shadowing - spikes or indentations causing shadows and highlights - on many different levels of detail - large lumps on the carapace that define the exoskeleton shape to small individual micro-bumps, etc. This basically is displacement / bump mapping in 3D. An understanding of material really helps here - wet / smooth surfaces like crab shells have many sharp, well-defined highlights that occur at certain contours of feature, while dry / rough features like rubber have spread out and weaker highlights. Metals have highlights which are the color of the metal, non-metals have white highlights, etc. Then I do the reflection passes. There are countless angles on an object, so you imagine rays of light hitting those and bouncing back to the camera, but they also bounce onto other surfaces of the object and can cast light on multiple bounces. Examples of this are the dark part of the hind leg being illuminated by the dirt on the ground, and the reflection of the ground, marine, and sky in the zergling's two large jaw pincers, or the reflection of the ground and sky in the zergling's eye that make it look spherical. Thinking this way and working in many layers / passes helps me create a more realistic feel.
