Description = Full View for tutorial . . . it's huge =

This tutorial was made in Photoshop and for people who have a tablet. However, there are quite a few tips that mouse users could find helpful as well. And I ink in all other programs the same way that I do here, just with different tools.

- Well what do you know, I did get around to actually making this thing ^__^ And I really hope that at least some people will find it helpful in their artistic endeavors. I know that it is long, but I tried to keep it as short as possible without keeping anything important out. It took a bit longer than I actually imagined it would. But I still had a lot of fun doing it.

- - This is my first real tutorial, so I hope that it is up to par with what people have come to expect with tutorials. If you have any questions or concerns about anything feel free to ask them here, send me a note or whatever else you would like to do to try and reach me ^~^

Did you use a Wacom tablet or a computer drawing tablet? I'm using a mouse and I hate my line work when I draw in pencil. I use the levels in the layer to make it darker but it's still crappy!

Here a re a few examples:

That's my line work, below I use the shapes tool to go over my line work and try to make it look good,

I just want to cry. Please if you have any clues any ideas in using a mouse to go over line work , I'd apprecitae it very muchT_T.

At the time of this tutorial I was using a very old Graphire tablet.

Hmmm ... I personally would not do lines on a computer with a mouse. Before I had a tablet I would ink my pencil sketches with pens/markers and then scan those in and color with a mouse using the lasso tool, etc ...

If I absolutely had to do lines with a mouse I would probably use the pen tool and learn to how bessier curves work much better than I do at the moment. I know that there are several inking tutorials with the pen tool around that you can look at if you haven't used it before.

However, if you keep drawing your control should increase and using clean pencil lines should look just fine. There are lots of pieces in my gallery that are just pencil lines.

I am not sure what you are asking about actually. I just use a tablet for all of the lines that aren't made with marquee tools. Thank you.

This is really helpful, but you're using a Pen Tool, right?
I only have Photoshop Elements 6.0, and don't have a Pen Tool, what do you suggest I do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

coreymill In reply to The-Cakeman [2008-02-08 18:31:50 +0000 UTC]

No, it was done with the brush tool. I use a small round brush for the inking usually, but if you don't have a tablet you won't be able to ink in the same way. But I think that Elements 6 has brushes to use, so if you have a tablet I think you can use the same method I use.

- If you have any other questions or anything feel free to ask and I will try and answer them.

Cool,
I don't own a tablet, but what I've recently found out was that I can use the Magic Wand tool to select all the lines, then fill them in onto a new layer.
Anyway, thanks! I appreciate your help.

I just happened to come across this.
I must say, this is one of the best tutorials I've seen.
Most people don't put as much description on how to do things.
You make sure to note things like [shift] and [ctrl-z] and other useful tips that most people neglect.
All in all, very thorough.

Wow. I never came across this method! THANK YOU!!! I SUCK at lineart, and this TOTALLY helped. Yay! Oh, just a quick question, what brush did you use? I mean, what size?

coreymill In reply to SteveonSeeley [2007-05-02 22:44:48 +0000 UTC]

I am glad it helped ^^

- And it really just depends on how big your file is. If you have a HUGE file then you can use a pretty big brush for lineart, but if it's smaller you will have to stick to a small brush :3

I really think that tablets are a lot of fun ^___^

- And they really do help out a lot if you plan on doing digital work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rhapsodyinaqua In reply to coreymill [2007-03-24 05:01:21 +0000 UTC]

They take some getting used to though...I used to have one (that died on me) and I would always get confused as to where to look and such >.< but I guess if I can draw with a mouse then I could probably draw with a tablet ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

coreymill In reply to Rhapsodyinaqua [2007-03-24 05:15:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it all depends I guess. It does take a little while to really get used to it, but once I did get used to it . . . it really helped me a lot. I was always terrible with a mouse, but I know some people that can really do some amazing work with a mouse.

CantEscape [2007-02-28 16:45:08 +0000 UTC]

wow thanks! no really I wished there was more! it was helpful beccause I use photoshop as well and I did not know about how to make straight lines. I work differently. I ink my pictures on the paper with a specail inking pen then I scan it in and on the layer I multiply it so all the lines are on my first layer then I go down and make other layers for my coloring and shading. but thats cool. its different. and your way is better because you can erase. but I can erase too once I scan it in. but yeah cool thanks for the tips. they were useful

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

coreymill In reply to CantEscape [2007-03-02 20:41:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, inking things traditionally has a much different feel than when you ink on the computer. It really depends on what you are looking for in your art.

- But I am glad you found it usefull.
