Description
One drab November evening, Holmes suggests to Watson that he try on that army uniform again…A nice night in with an army surgeon, a decanter, and a bearskin rug. :-D
The tedious ‘historical notes’ bit:
I may have taken a little artistic licence with several things…
==========================================
- The red cross armband. Though the use of it certainly predates the Afghan Wars, and I found photos of individual European soldiers wearing the red cross in the Boer and Zulu Wars, plus various people doing the same during the Afghan ones, I don’t actually know if this was common practice for British army surgeons. Practically, I believe that some method of distinguishing between medics and infantry must have been employed, and this suits my purposes as well as any other. And I think it looks good on him. (Ditto for the knapsack).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT #1 - 01/03/2008:
From [link] :
"One of the reasons for [the] neglect [of wounded soldiers] was that army medical services were not distinguished by an emblem easily identified by all parties to the conflict.
In 1863 an international conference met in Geneva to try and remedy the ineffectiveness of army medical services. The following year the first of the Geneva conventions were passed, in which a red cross made of five equal squares on a white background was officially recognised as the distinctive sign of medical services of armed forces."
I consider myself vindicated.
==========================================
- The jacket. Watson’s regt., the 66th Foot (Berkshires), are depicted in photos around the time of Maiwand as in red jackets with either white or green cuffs. I’ve elected to put Watson in green ones, as I think it suits him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT #2 - 01/03/2008 - Argh, the red jacket is actually incorrect. (Damn.) As my research has progressed, I've come to realise that Watson (as an Assistant Surgeon) would in fact have worn the dark uniform of the Army Medical Department rather than the scarlet (home service) regimental jacket of the 66th.
Yes, I got it wrong. So shoot me.
It's still a pretty picture.
==========================================
I found a photograph of Surgeon Major Alexander Francis Preston, the army surgeon of the 66th who Conan Doyle is regarded as basing Watson upon, in full dress uniform. Used this for the main reference, but put Watson’s lower half in campaigning gear of khaki trousers and puttees, rather than the smart striped trousers of Preston’s photograph. [C’mon, he’s dressing up for Holmes, not going on parade. I suspect Holmes rather enjoys the contrast between the dashing connotations of the red jacket and the gritty reality of puttees and khaki

This is wonderful! And I love all the research you've done. Their legs intertwined, and all of the stuff they've got laid out around them... awesome.
Also, dancing men signature = win!

Cheers! Thank you - I'm rather fond of this one.
(:shuffles feet: It's a bit embarrassing to look back at all the wrong conclusions I drew re the uniforms, but the research has progressed since...and it was fun to do a Redcoat!Watson anyhow!)

..... fic, not the quote. In which he did sleep with half of Scotland Yard. I felt wrong for just reading it!

Ah...actually, on reflection, I am horribly afraid I know the fic you mean! o.O

Wow, okay. Watson + army uniform = I SO WOULD!
And well done for the proving of the armband. Look, he's hard and stuff, but he's also caring and a doctor, etc!
But... where is he hiding the olive? o.O
I think I saw that quote on a fic the other day actually. It was quite a shocking. It gave me the raised eyebrows, and much throat-clearing coughs.

Ah, Watson: certainly the perfect combination.
Meh, you just *had* to lower the tone with the olive gag, didn't you...
Ta, mate! After all the repeated "Sod,Igotthatwrong"s - the armband is STAYING, damnit!
And I agree. That quote was shocking, indeed.

This is exactly why Sherlockians rule. There are few things as absurdly delighting as meticulously researched slash! Historical accuracy is tEH SEXX.
Oh, and I hope Holmes knows how to take an order. "Let him be my master elsewhere, I at least was his
in the bed room."

Thank you!
The research is progressing in sporadic jerks, though it's still painfully skeletal. (Though I finally found a source to confirm the use of the red cross as standard practice, hurrah!) I know what you mean - the amount of work (which frequently eclipses mine) that goes into including correct details in some of the fanfics/fanart is amazing.
[grin] You remind me of a quote I came across once, which ran something like: "Definition of a Holmes slasher: somebody who finds it easier to believe he would sleep with half of Scotland Yard than that he would EVER wear a deerstalker in town."
As far as taking orders is concerned, I imagine Watson can produce a damn good Sergeant's voice when necessary...

Thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks Watson - esp. in uniform - is actually a bit of a dynamo.
Preston pic? Sure. The main site is:

and the direct link to Preston's pic is:

I haven't quite got the hang of searching efficiently in their collections yet (so am trawling), but they have over a hundred original photographs of the 66th. Fascinating site, packed with information.
As I said, as it looks a dress uniform pic, and Preston was a Surgeon Major at the time it was taken AFAIK. As Watson was only an Assistant Surgeon when attached to his original regt., the Northumberland Fusiliers, I've downgraded his jacket a wee bit - I based it mainly on general infantry tunics of the 66th. (In any case, I can conceive of people being issued with more basic uniforms than their own rank's if you've just been attached to a new regt. in the middle of a campaign, as Watson was [supply troubles, etc.], but not of being given higher-ranking ones.)
Message me if you're interested at all, I can bore for Britain on chasing down military stuff.

Wow, this is great!
I love how good the uniform looks on Watson *sexy as hell*
Say, you have me curious now. Do you have the link to the picture of Surgeon Major Alexander Francis Preston? I´ve tried to google for it, but didn´t find anything ^^
I´d like to see the man, Doyle supposedly based Watson on. ^^
