Description I would like to share with you all one of my fav yet very grim spots of Paris that I some what enjoyed going too.
The catacombs of Paris, I,v never seen a dead body before or any thing near to it, despite my own grim work.. but when i came here i saw 6 million.. thats a fact. there are 6 million human skeletons here, at one point.. rotting corpses..
started out in 1700s as former mines then later became a quick resort to deposing bodys or bones from churches that where being eliminated for the expansion of Paris and its lively hood.
This place is pretty much a grave yard with out the dirt, actual human skeletons stacked 6-5 feet tall on each sides of the walls, they run for miles and every spot or so a momentum or stone tablet with poems that had a grim tone but meaningful verse to remind us of how important life, also some skulls would be placed as shapes, one a heart, a church and cross, and so on.
when me and my friends came here we thought this was gonna be easy but man.. it was some what scary, I got use to it quick but the reality of death and darkness in one spot is rather.. BONE CHILLING HAHAHAH XP, i made death and bone puns the whole time. but at one point in the dark i walked away from my friends and was alone.. for abit of discovering..by myself surrounded by the dead in the darkness. dripping water and motionless air... there once human faces staring at me while I gaze at there remains...and there was silence. I,v never heard a silence more deep then any thing.. for some reason I had a feeling that a million screams wanted to be released, I felt tension in the air.. I shivered abit and kept walking..each skull facing forward.. there shadow covered eye holes gazing while i kept reminding myself there dead and that any interaction was impossible till "scream!! well.. that what i thought it looked like it was doing..when i saw a skull with its jaw bones. it kinda looked like it was screaming..so I shook myself and found my friends, after reading the poems and noting the different features of each skull, my laid by mood of being around death became respectful, after seeing skulls with there jaw bones and teeth "a rare site" they some how appeared to be uttering an expression.. which made them seem very human.. honestly I was abit shocked and a total reality check came and slapped me across the face. death became a littel too real at this point.. and now I appreciate my life and vale it more then ever. over all I gain inspiration for art and live life as much as i could.. as they the ones below will remind you in the catacombs, that regardless of rank, king queen, fortune or no fortune, good or bad. you'll one day end up like them in the ground.

I would never go there because I heard you can easily get lost and it's very misty and low on oxygen. Plus, why would you want to see  dead bodies anyway? :/
That's all it is.
i don't see how this entertains people. :/

you heard incorrectly, when I was there the only way you could get lost is if you forget which direction you where heading to, despite all the different paths you can only end up at the end or start.
well, plenty of people want to see dead bodies, every time I went, the place was packed, every other day for the pass 2 weeks lines went to out the street with people. I want to see dead bodies to honour them and hope they will grant me some sort of inspiration which in deed they did, of course its not for entertainment, honestly have no idea were you got that idea, thou, some people like my self live for the strange and unusual.

Hm, I never thought of it that way. Interesting, and thank you for informing me about your point of view I also like dark themed subjects, but only in fiction,
such as art on here or fanfiction; that kind of media. But I don't tamper with dark themed subjects in reality. For those who do and have the courage, including you, congrats. I probably wouldn't have that kind of courage XD

it is very interesting. just to walk around there. once ever one of those skull held a mind, and energy that bounded about like how we do now. its pretty neat and sad at the same time.
just something I think about when I see skeletons. I wonder who they were and what they were like. all they left were just there bone remains.

.....
You know the sensation when you look at dead skulls like these and you just don't know what to say? But you're not afraid, though.. Actually, you don't even know what you're supposed to feel. You just keep looking at it as if it was nothing but lots of skulls. You don't feel scared, you feel nothing actually. You just look at them and say nothing.
.....
Maaann, as i said before:

"What is a human mind? It's a little box of secrets and horrors, hold on the top of a human pile.
And what is a man? Just a piece of meat, hanging in a pile of bones, filled with blood, and covered with skin.
Guess why surgeons don't have fear of their job? This is a man to them."

....
It's just fucked up, dude. Both third and fifth pictures(from the top to the bottom) can relate to my thoughts. I just imagined skulls like these myself.
Nightmares? No.. Fruits of the manifest of my deepest, morbid thoughts, hidden in the dark corners of my self-created universe called "mind".

Catacombs I've always thought were cool. Always seemed that death was an art, not to be feared but to be respected. That's why I've always loved poems and stories about death and the reaper. "Don't fear the reaper, for he visits us all", my all time favorite grim quote.

I guess I'm not normal to be entranced rather than mortified

Oh... We were there, standing in front of the main door, and we couldn't go in: in those few days we were in Paris catacombs were closed... Because of some vandals...

I was mad at those anonymous suckers destroying such unique monumentum, but after seeing your photos, I'm little bit glad we couldn't in. Especially those jaw-complete jolly rogers look scary as hell.

Really nice photo, and a little creepy.

I remember I was so afraid of skulls when I was a child, because they gave me a very depressing feeling. Everytime I looked at pictures of skeletons I thought about death, and when I become old and die I'm gonna become a skeleton, haha ^^,

Guess I can say you have more courage than me when it comes to this sort of stuff. XD I'd be utterly terrified to enter such a place. lol Was it like a tour or something? Were there lights? I guess the small mysophobic in me would also prevent me from going down there, you never know what sort of lingering diseases could be there.

I've always found it funny too that the only tissue that we leave behind is the most "expressive" tissue. It's sort of ironic in one way.

Other than that, I guess I wonder how this all holds up together? Did they glue all the bones together? It seems like it would be easy for the structures to fall apart, especially since the skulls are spherical.

Did you see the babies on the wall? ^^ Glad you came to some realizations. I'd like to add however that it's not the destination. We will end up in the ground some time in the future, but it's what you do till then that you're remembered for. We won't have a chance for redemption after we are in the ground. So make sure you're remembered for the right reasons. ;3 (I have a feeling you'll be remembered in the warmest as well as the coldest of hearts. You are a very lovable guy. <3)

Thinking that each of them lead a life of its own can be overwhelming considering the number.

Despite living in the suburbs of Paris, I never visited the catacombs, I should get to it! It was featured in Max Brook's World War Z as a refuge for Parisians from the zombie apocalypse. Just imagine running away from moaning zombies in a place full of millions of skulls. D:

I've always wanted to see the catacombs, don't know if you know this but the section you are allowed to visit is very small... Compared to the rest. In fact they are vast and spread beneath a large section of Paris, like a maze. People have explored them and left beautiful grafitti and paintings on the walls in the dark in some places. Some people have parties down there. And some people who have explored, never came back at all.
