Description
Okay, so I really the Deltora Quest book series.I reread the full first series just barely, and I loved it all over again. It's simple, but it was really quite fun and enjoyable. Plus the Glus in the 6th book, man, that thing gave me nightmares as a kid and being able to imagine it with an (more) adult brain did not do anything to reduce the terror. I still nearly had nightmares from that thing. (I'm not gonna say too much, but like, seriously, read the series, it's quick and fun.)
Anyway, my favorite book was always the 4th book.
Quick series plot run down;
Deltora was split into 7 tribes, each with a powerful gem, then a dude came along and united them to fight against the Shadow Lord (yeah, I know, bear with the cheesy villain name), and became the first king of Deltora. He forged the 7 gems into a belt that granted him power and protection. Over the years, the royal family got crappy, and one day the Shadow Lord attacks and separates the gems, scattering them back around the country. Our main character, Lief's, father was a friend of the king at the time of the attack, and vowed to reclaim the gems while his friend hid. But Lief's dad hurt himself, and now can't do it, so Lief and a retired/escaped palace guard named Barda are sent off to find the 7 gems instead. Along the way they meet Jasmine, another main character who I'm not going to go into too much right now, but she's cool. She can talk to creatures and nature. Anyway, in each book they recover a gem and then the last book is them fighting against the shadow lord. The seven gems are Topaz, Ruby, Opal, Lapis Lazuli, Emerald, Amethyst, and Diamond.
As a kid, I already loved Ancient Egypt, so I was thrilled to see Lapis included in the list, it's one of my favorite gems to this day still. And I was even more thrilled as a kid when I got the bonus book, Secrets of Deltora and realized that the map of Deltora kinda aligned with the map of the US and that my state was firmly in the Lapis Lazuli gem territory. I've always kinda thought of the lapis as my gem cause of this series.
So it's only natural that years later, I'm able to create my own character from the Lapis Lazuli tribe. (or Mere Tribe, as they're called in the books)
Here we are, my gal Scorpia. She's a half Mere tribe, half Plains tribe (Opal) citizen. Her and her twin sister practiced witchcraft from a young age and the townsfolk would come to them to ensure good luck, as the Mere are a very superstitious people. Scorpia herself, despite having her own magic, wears good luck charms like the rest of the Mere folk. She has the die for gambling luck, a heart to find love, a dagger for protection, a cup to prevent thirst, bread to prevent hunger, coins to bring money, and many, many more. She also cares a few Lapis Lazulis around, as they are talismans against evil in this world. She wears the traditional Mere leader cape, with the lapis pattern on it. She caries her staff, in case the magic backfires, it's not her arm that gets blasted off. (plus it gives more places to hang charms). However, when they were fairly young, around 17, Scorpia's sister took a trip to the Shifting Sands for unknown reasons and disappeared, never to be seen again. (The Shifting Sands in the books is a desert that seems to generate more and more of itself, it's inhabited by giant bugs and smaller lizards, and at the center is a large conical structure that contains a myriad of treasures and bones, read the book if you wanna know what that is, but it's where Scorpia's sister went, and there's a constant buzzing sound all around. The Mere people fear it greatly.)
Hanging from Scorpia's belt is her family's Lapis Adder skin, as the ultimate good luck charm/protection against snake bites.
Hope you guys like her! I know her story probably doesn't make a lot of sense lol. Sorry.
Also, if you ever read the books and happen to live in the US, or just want to get into the books and wanna know what gem you'd be, here's the map of Deltora (no, I don't know what's up with the Opal colors either), and a US Map to compare, adjust it to be close as you can.
I drew her at church last sunday, and on the airplane to florida.
