Description Wow! Had a really cool chance to chase a storm that was as lazy as I am! This huge behemoth just lumbered along at a leisurely pace flexing its muscles every so often and then receding. It looks like a beast but it was kind of a kitten--there was lots of rain and tennis ball size hail reported at one point. It carried a tornado warning at several points too but non formed that anyone (including me) saw. It certainly had the rotation at the base to form one. This storm just hung around Bear Butte State Park near Sturgis, South Dakota all afternoon before easing off to the east. It seemed to me that it was caught in some kind of atmospheric eddy as all the other storms in the area were racing off to the northeast.

This storm must have been very enticing as there must have been 100 storm chasers following along. There were chasers from as far away as Tennessee and Texas and locals like myself. I stopped and talked with a few of them and they all agreed that it was one of the most photogenic storms they had encountered this year, but not terribly exciting.

Not a lot of lightning with this one--I guess that's one of the disappointing things for me--but the structure of the storm was beautiful! this is one of the first shots I took and couldn't resist the opportunity to have the Doppler Radar tower north of New Underwood, S.D. in the foreground. I've not shot many structures with that 11-16 lens and I've tried to do some perspective correction but the tower still leans into the shot, but I like the distortion--like it's being sucked into the maw of the maelstrom!

It was a fun chase and I've got a couple more shots to share from it later.

Thank you Dennis

Very similar only without the EF-5 tornado. We get those up here too, but they usually don't do a lot of damage because of the sparse population. A few cows, a few antelope, a ranch house or two, but nothing like what happened in your country. I sure wish this storm had went through Moore rather than that killer beast that did go through there. It was a gentle rain shower in comparison.

Somewhere around here I have some shots taken back in the 80s with a Kodak 120 pocket film camera of a massive storm east of Kingfisher, Oklahoma. I was on a wheat harvest crew then and rode that storm out in the cab of a JD 7720 combine. Got a couple shots of the tornado that passed through the field we were cutting--not good shots and the Kodaks wide lens made the tornado little more than a tiny thing but it passed within a quarter mile of us. I'll have to look for those prints

It was fun--the most fun I've had on a chase in a long time, but the fun is always tempered by recent events.

you're welcome John... the supercells are amazing to watch bloom. I could do it all day as long as I'm on the back side. the size is always amazing.

find those prints!!!

You`ll usually always get that effect using the wide boy on structures and architecture John,as you probably know,I have always loved the wide angled effect and what it does though if you try to correct these converging verticals too much then you`ll end up with fairly cropped image.
I love how it`s worked here, exactly as you noted, the structure and the lamp-post bottom left, do lend themselves well to the appearance of being sucked into the dramatic storm...excellent Brother

Thank you Brother!

You and your work is a major factor in my buying this lens--I love that distortion too I felt that the distortion was a bit too much in this case and made the scene a little too surreal.

I shot some video of this storm with a dash camera. Like I said, I was hoping for more lightning than there was with this storm. I may post it privately on youtube sometime. I have to review it though.

Thank you Richard! It was a Jim-Dandy! It would intensify and get real mean looking then soften a bit and then re-intensify. It did that at least 4 times in the 3 hours I was on it. The chase ended with a pretty decent sunset showing some color on it and the mammatus following it.

Thank you Tris! I'm glad you like the distortion too--it seemed to add some extra drama to the scene.

Wow Bonza shot Johnno !!!!
It sure looks like you were about to be pummelled into the dirt with this one.
Love those awesome clouds but damn...would have scared me shitless if I were there in person. Heart attack material

Thank you Karla

I was kind of anticipating a good pummeling myself didn't happen though and the worst I got was a few raindrops once I was absolutely certain this storm was going to drop a tornado and it tried, but never did. I knew what direction it was moving and was far enough away to get away if it did.

It was exhilarating though and a mild cardio workout at times but overall nothing to have to change your drawers over

I wonder what the Life Spheres would do with this scene? I think the Quantum Mirrors would shatter!

Thank you Miss Alice! 'Twas a lot of fun for sure! It was even more fun sending real time pics to you and Bob during the chase I've always chased alone (not much chance of getting Miss Audra out with me ) so it's kinda nice to have a ride along partner even if it is through texting
