Description Wow! Had a really cool chance to chase a storm that was as lazy as I am! This huge behemoth just lumbered along at a leisurely pace flexing its muscles every so often and then receding. It looks like a beast but it was kind of a kitten--there was lots of rain and tennis ball size hail reported at one point. It carried a tornado warning at several points too but non formed that anyone (including me) saw. It certainly had the rotation at the base to form one. This storm just hung around Bear Butte State Park near Sturgis, South Dakota all afternoon before easing off to the east. It seemed to me that it was caught in some kind of atmospheric eddy as all the other storms in the area were racing off to the northeast.

This storm must have been very enticing as there must have been 100 storm chasers following along. There were chasers from as far away as Tennessee and Texas and locals like myself. I stopped and talked with a few of them and they all agreed that it was one of the most photogenic storms they had encountered this year, but not terribly exciting.

Not a lot of lightning with this one--I guess that's one of the disappointing things for me--but the structure of the storm was beautiful! this is one of the first shots I took and couldn't resist the opportunity to have the Doppler Radar tower north of New Underwood, S.D. in the foreground. I've not shot many structures with that 11-16 lens and I've tried to do some perspective correction but the tower still leans into the shot, but I like the distortion--like it's being sucked into the maw of the maelstrom!

It was a fun chase and I've got a couple more shots to share from it later.

Dang, that's a sweet shot! At this stage I think *INTOtheRFD , =JupiterLily and I were right under it and just to the ENE of the updraft. Caught a storm in front of that radar site last August though Really been thinking about moving somewhere up to the black hills, like Deadwood/Lead.

Thanks Evan I pretty much figured at the time that the composition wouldn't be too original and that I had seen a similar shot somewhere

I stayed to the SSE of this one and gave it up over by Wall.

As much as you like tromping around in deep snow you'd certainly like the Deadwood/Lead area They get snow up there when the rest of the Hills doesn't get a thing

Upslope magic! Wind flows up the hills and creates just enough lift to make those cumulus drop stupid amounts of snow Gonna be interesting learning to forecast that type of stuff if I do move up there

U did a great job John getting those pictures... those storm chasers just get too close at times, saw two were killed it made news here..

Thank you Linley Yeah, the 3 researchers got caught in a bad one and it's a sad thing to hear about. The work they were doing helps everybody at some time or another. I was watching the radar on that storm and saw that strange turn the storm took. I was hoping that it wouldn't catch people by surprise but no luck there

Ohhhh, me too, Rose, me too! A single supercell where you can see the structure doesn't happen often in western South Dakota--usually they are surrounded by low level clouds so this one was a treat

Thank you very much!

Corvidae65 In reply to dsnider [2013-05-29 22:28:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Dennis. This one had me thinking it was going to be that one storm every chaser dreams about--mucho structure, wall clouds, tornados, lightning galore!

but instead...

Anyway, the other chasers weren't much of a problem--wherever they were I was a mile farther down the road and when they moved, so did I

HAHA! Shoulda known you'd have something figured out for that. But wow man...getting to even SEE an entire storms structure top to bottom, side to side like that is something I dream of! Amazing stuff and so glad you decided to chase this! Even if it did just purr a little.

Cheers John. Great to hear!

Yep, all is going well here too. Just got back from the three week gold detecting holiday. Nailed my first nugget and I may post up a photo or two from the trip in the coming days.

I'm definitely missing the storms already. I may have a slight weather addiction problem

Corvidae65 In reply to Syndyne [2013-05-29 22:32:34 +0000 UTC]

Very cool! I'm glad to hear of someone actually getting a nugget--be cool to see it should you post a shot About 20 years ago I tried some nugget detecting here and found enough iron trash to make a really big Slinky

Methinks, the weather addiction is a global thing What we need to do is winter in Australia and summer in South Dakota--or vice versa since you're seasons are opposite

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Syndyne In reply to Corvidae65 [2013-05-30 03:54:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha yes! A weather swap system would be fine by me

I will post up a pic of the little nugget in the next day or so The rusty old iron trash is everywhere here too. There were places I couldn't even lower the coil to the ground without the detector (Minelab GPX5000) overloading. It's nice to be in a clean area where trash targets are minimal.

I'll get the trip shots off the 5D and post one or two of those soon also.

That would be heaven indeed! I had a Garrett GTX 1000 at the time--not a bad detector but old technology for today. Doesn't matter much though--I hope my ex's husband enjoyed it

Corvidae65 In reply to Biutz [2013-05-28 02:00:04 +0000 UTC]

Perfect description, Bia That's what makes this sort of thing so alluring to me--the combination of emotions really makes me feel alive especially when it wild! I find it interesting that you folks don't get this kind of weather much in Romania. Is it like that all the time or there just haven't been any thunderstorms there this year?

Thank you my friend and I'm glad you enjoyed the shot

Biutz In reply to Corvidae65 [2013-05-29 19:16:17 +0000 UTC]

Thunderstorms in general aren't all that dramatic, at least not where I live, there are heavy clouds, but not so well defined, some lightning and thunders, the second biggest flood since Noah, and then rainbows and sunshine
