im interested in knowing how you did some of this. speed painting with digital media is kind of new to me. turned out great by the way.

Well this piece in particular was mostly an experiment with some of the textured brushes on SAI, specifically the "chalk" and "flat" brushes. Not too much planning went into the piece into this honestly, so I can't really lay out a "process", but it really does help occasionally to just scribble on a canvas and make something out of it. Really helps practice on things like overall form and movement.

It does a bit. what brush to use and brush settings are something that's eluded me for a while. I find it way less complicated to do traditionally. did you add an overlay layer for the light source from the left?

Ah, yes! More specifically, I filled in a whole layer with a navy-ish color and set it to overlay, I believe. Then I airbrushed yellow in from the bottom left corner and some reds where I saw fit.
