Description Gonna include these gals in a comic soon enough, but until then...
Might as well share who they are.

Aurora's Journal: Silvanian Hornets

Planet of Origin: The Forest Planet of Silvan (Have spread to many planets, primarily those covered in dense forests)
Element: None
Magic Level: Unknown
Danger Level: High

In all of my travels, few species have instilled as much simultaneous awe and fear in me as the Silvanian Hornet. Their coordination and intelligence are above the level of any species I've ever seen, not to mention their innovative capacity. Despite living in relative isolation, they have managed to develop incredibly advanced magical technology to keep themselves not just alive, but prosperous.

The hive is ruled by a singular queen. She is forward-thinking and brilliant, and she has to be. After all, it is her that coordinates the activities that the hive undergoes. She decides what is necessary and when, so a good hive tends to have a great queen. Hives that have failed have generally seen queens that don't act in the best interest of their children and sisters. This reason also explains the very peculiar selection for queen. The hive evaluates each of the "princesses" to determine the order of succession, and the "princess" that fares the best in this evaluation is chosen as the next queen after the current one is undisposed. I have yet to determine exactly what this evaluation entails.

The rest of the hierarchy beneath the queen is made up primarily of drones. These drones are asexual and can be used for any number of tasks, usually involving gathering food or defending the hive from danger. Their thoughts are occupied only with serving their queen in whatever way they were ordered to serve. There are also specialized hornets who work with the queen very closely, usually in helping her reproduce or take care of young. Most of these are extraordinarily productive drones who were promoted or the "princesses" that did not pass the evaluation to become the next queen.

Another point of interest for me was their feeding habits. These Hornets, much like the hornets I am used to from my time on Earth, are primarily predators. They eat many large game animals and are not above stealing livestock from farms. They also eat fruits and vegetables, but these are in far larger quantities than earth hornets. They do not produce honey of any kind.

By far the most intriguing (and terrifying) aspect of their behavior is their relationship with humans. Normally, when their nest is attacked by animals, these hornets will simply kill the attacker and use them as food. Yet when humans and other human-like species are perceived to be a threat, the hornets render them unconscious with a sleep-inducing venom from their stingers and take them within the hive. As for what happens there, I cannot say I know. These hornets are also known to kidnap human-like species from their settlements.
