Description
(AU ART)They’re here.
...
“Where are we going?” The navy blue hedgehog’s eyes fizzled with excitement.
“Observatory,” was all the small girl answered, hoisting him up in her arms. His claws dug into her forearms and the blood on his hands soaked her sleeves, but she did not mind.
The girl and her two hedgehogs, one hyperactive and blue, the other serene and ebony, all made their way down the corridors thick with vines of wires and flashes of lights and buttons, silently stalking the shadows in front of their view, feeling the walls for navigation in the abyss of darkness, not stopping and not making a single sound.
Observatory. That was a word all 3 liked to hear. Observatory meant stars and invisible walls, Earth and milky galaxies filled with cloudy constellations. Observatory meant sprawling views of freedom, places to run up and down, places to sit and wander in the reverie of your own thoughts.
There was a singular slipping noise as the airlock-esque door opened, revealing a flood of aqua and white and blues of all kinds, as the light from the outside shimmered and dusted over little flecks of dust and over fur and skin and eyes. The shadows were heavy, the light painting a clear outline over the room, tinging it a beautiful ocean blue.
Maria breathed deep. She let Sonic out of her arms, feeling the rush of wind as he took off running down the room’s extensive length, burning off his excess energy he had built up over the past few hours. Sonic’s speed kicked up the dust in the air and made it swirl and twinkle, almost like the stars on the outside.
Shadow’s silent demeanour was not altered by the observatory, however he did smile and place his hand against the invisible wall, or window, as some called it. It looked like he was touching the earth. If only that were true. He was up here and not down there, and that was a curse that had befallen all 3 of them for a very long time.
“It’s extra wonderful tonight,” Maria’s soft voice echoed through the room.
“Mmm,” Shadow sighed as Sonic slowed to a halt and wandered next to his brother, panting.
“Neat view...” Sonic dragged his hand across the glass, in awe. “I like hearing stories of the outside, but it’s better when we can sneak out and go together.”
“I agree,” Shadow mumbled quietly, looking at the clock in the corner of the ceiling. It was past midnight, far past the 3’s bedtime. Everyone on the ARK was supposedly asleep.
A perfect time to escape mortal chains and enjoy wishing.
It was all so serene, they stayed and whispered to eachother as the ARK slowly rotated around the Earth like a gentle waltz.
It was all so perfect, just like every other night they had escaped to this freedom.
But then it wasn’t.
Sudden bangs. Smashes. Glass shattering. Echoing through the ship, ringing through the halls. Alarms. Lights. Voices.
Gunshots.
All 3 seemed to freeze in unison. Maria stood up from her relaxed sitting position, eyes clouded with and face pale with shock. Sonic’s energy sparked up like a strike of lightning, Shadow instinctively snarling and getting in front of his brother and sister to defend them. Hearts stopped. Muscles froze. All 3 seemed trapped in time.
Voices could be heard more clear, as footsteps, heavy, steel footsteps, rung through the colony.
Silence had disappeared in a second. Screaming. Yelling. More smashing. More gunshots. One clear voice piercing the air. One quote that forever haunted the ARK.
That forever haunted the heart of whom it was directed to.
And forever haunted the heart of whom it was about.
“Tell us.
“Project Shadow.
“Tell us where it is or we shoot.”
…
