Description

One could travel the entirety of Hiraeth and still not have seen everything she has to offer. Hiraeth’s intersections with other realms are all over but hidden by the beings who melded them from raw magic. The entrances to these places are usually unassuming: an odd spacing between two trees, a loose ring of stones, in the crevasses within caves, behind overgrown ruins, and so on. These places are rarely found and almost always stumbled upon by complete accident— usually accounting for fantastical tales told by eccentric explorers and playful children who may of strayed too far into the forest. The only clear gateway to these places are in the form of pale masonry known as Interwicks. These gates were originally made by a Fae lord known as The Great Seer, who had an affinity with sharing knowledge and connecting the realms. Using parts of her soul, she had artisans craft the shell for what would be an Interwick. They are very rare but incredibly valuable beings, capable of appearing in any realm of existence.

Interwicks can feel the presence of other souls, and if they deem one as innocent, they may pass through their arch to a hidden sanctuary somewhere in between the realms where they can rest. They try to lure in those in danger through subtle whispers and the glints of light from their eyes, in an attempt to guide them to safety. Alternatively, a soul heavy with sin or consumed in rage who walks through and Interwick would be transported to somewhere dangerous and vile, so they may reflect on their misdeeds. One who is of neither extreme or is not in danger can do little with an Interwick, but they can ask to be sent to a specific location if they carry an object from place they wish to be. Interwicks are resilient beings, still operating even if their foundations begin sinking or if they have crumbled into mere stones— one just needs to see their faint eyes hovering in the air to know they are still present.

While The Great Seer’s intentions were true, many other Fae lords grew fearful of what she was capable of. Many rallied around her cause, but other lords were not willing to let her open the floodgates of reality, and she was struck down. Her soul was already carved into pieces by her own doing as she put herself into every Interwick. Those who wish to remove her permanently have tried to tear down and shatter the Interwicks, but they are not as sedentary as they appear. Those who try and dismantle an Interwick will throw it into a frenzy— lashing out with a bramble of invisible claws their foes will either be flayed or dragged into the Interwick, transported far away. The Great Seer’s followers have built new Interwicks from their own souls. While she believed in a completely boundless and borderless future, her followers have created a maze of Interwicks around her old manor, forcing any who wish to enter her final resting place to face a gauntlet of realms. What remains of her following looks to continue her work, but is now said to owe their allegiance to a figure known as the Grand Whisper, a dire and enigmatic figure from the Deep Realm many have tried and failed to unravel.
