Description

Far away from the roads of the world and beyond what one’s imagination can fathom is the Deep Realm, a world of oddities. It is found beneath the reaches of the Fae Realm and what lies beneath it, no one knows. Earth and stone are covered completely in an overgrowth of vines, weeds, ferns, and flowers, emanating from the great forested bones of primal creatures whose potent lifeblood saturated the land in unstable fertility. Demons and other magical beings live here, making homes among the ruins of foreign realms and other unwanted and forlorn things. In the Fae Realm, the natives rely on purifying salt water from great inland oceans; in the Deep Realm, water flows through brooks and rivers but it runs backwards towards its source. Water scales upwards to the mountain ranges, either entering the pinnacles as mist or returning to everlasting glaciers that border the wild desert of the Deep Realm.

One of the few places rampant flora hasn’t reached, The Deep Realm desert is made up of snow and sand, with frost nipping the winds alongside volcanic outcroppings that shoot fire that sparks all manner of colours as it billows in the air. Absolutely volatile, it is the perfect home for the Ipri and Erbu. They float around icebergs and dunes looking for prey, the Erbu always carrying the Ipri, who occasionally springs forward upon their victims before coiling back up the Erbu when they need to travel. Almost always found together, the Ipri and the Erbu are symbiotic demons. Demons look for purpose to attune themselves to to gain form and power— the Ipri gains strength from giving warmth, and the Erbu grows in strength when they cool things down. In the frozen desert, they live off equivalent exchange, the Ipri too hot to freeze, and the Erbu too cold to melt, and stay at conveniently strong state. Some grow too comfortable in this bond and become like animals, only looking for food and shelter, but others still have their wits about them and are willing to converse and banter with travellers.

Normally, the Ipri and the Erbu were known to the people of Hiraeth as summons or familiars for mages and other magic folk, either providing service in comfort or battle. In recent times, Fae have begun hiring pairs of these demons to live in their homes, acting as a sentient and negotiable internal heating system. The few that live in solitude are forced to become more creative and proactive. Some Ipri move about the realms unseen looking for travellers lost in cold weather to quietly aid them in making a fire or to make blankets slightly toasty, while rogue Ipri may look to set wildfires and force heat upon the land. Erbu may make a pond pleasantly cool for wanderers to refresh themselves by, or send areas into a supernatural cold snap to appease their base need for brumal weather. Apart, they have the chance to grow into elemental behemoths, but together they monitor each other’s ego and find a slightly cozy normalcy most Demons struggle to find.
