Description
Ravenstorm sat quietly at the camp entrance. Above him the moon shone brightly, lighting up the Thunderclan hollow. There was something he couldn’t place, something that made his heart ache with pain. He often sat out late at night, pondering the hurt in his heart. Could it be the burning guilt of finally giving in and taking Sweetfoot as a mate, bearing their kits Willowpaw and Rockpaw? Or could it be that no matter how hard he tried, he never felt at home in the clan despite his loyalty?
Lost in thoughts of guilt, Ravenstorm was unaware of the sounds of paws on rock approaching him from behind. “Ravenstorm?” A familiar voice sounded, and as the black tom looked back to see who had spoken he spotted the white young warrior named Acornheart. “What are you doing out so late?”
There was a silence between the two toms as Ravenstorm examined his options. He could either tell a simple white lie and not burden the other, or he could confess his guilt. Carefully watching him, the burly white warrior seemed quite worried about him, and so with a forced sigh, he beckoned him over with the flick of his tail. “Acornheart” he started slowly. “Everything feels wrong… I don’t belong here.”
“You miss Shadowclan, don’t you?”
There was a heavy pause before the black tom nodded. “Marshstar had exiled me, but since Troutstar has become leader… I’ve just been thinking… What it would be like if I went back.” There was curiosity as Acornheart tilted his head and frowned. “Why were you really exiled, Ravenstorm. You’re a loyal and brave warrior, no one believes the story you told about breaking the warrior code and becoming exiled from your clan. Only Oakstar knows your truth. If you don’t mind me asking… What happened to you?”
Sheathing and unsheathing his claws anxious, the black warrior hesitated before sighing to himself quietly, looking at Acornheart with a sadness that looked as if it could never dissipate. “I was in love… I was in love with another tom. It was Troutfin, oh how I loved him, and now he’s the great leader Troutstar. Marshstar was able to see the ways that I felt toward his deputy, and he… He didn’t want a cat like me in his clan, even more so with feelings toward his deputy. Before anything could happen, he took the chance to get rid of me.”
An uncomfortable silence held between them before Acornheart spoke once again. “Do you still love him?”
A sad look came from the black tom, his heart seeming to have broke. “Yes,” he said softly. “I will always love him. We grew up together, we share the same memories. My feelings toward him have never faded, I still love him as much as the day I left.”
It was quite obvious that Acornheart was poorly attempting to hold back a smile. “What are you smiling about?” Ravenstorm huffed, a glare starting to form in his eyes. Did the warrior think his unrequited love was funny?
“Get out of here, you furball. You know you belong in Shadowclan. Your heart belongs to him.”
Shocked, the fur along the black tom’s spine bristled with anger. “Thunderclan is my home now, and I am loyal to my clan! My friends are here, my life is here, my family is here, my-”
“Heart is in Shadowclan.”
Once again a silence filled the air, and Acornheart watched the other who was clearly filled with mixed emotions. Breaking the quiet awkwardness between the two, the white warrior got to his paws as he nudged the other up. “Go. Listen to what your heart tells you, don’t live your life in regret. Be with the one you love rather than being away from him. You deserve happiness, and I hope to Starclan that he accepts your love. I will let Oakstar know the situation in the morning. He will understand- the whole clan will. We all want you to be happy.”
Ravenstorm hesitated before slowly bowing his head gratefully. “Thank you,” he said softly. A look of hope filled the older tom’s eyes as he pressed his nose to the others with gratitude.
After pulling back, the two stared at each other in the night’s silence before nodding to each other. As Ravenstorm set off to make his trek back home, he only reached several pawsteps out before coming to a halt, looking back over his shoulder to the Thunderclan warrior.
“Acornheart, why do you insist I follow my heart- Even though it means leaving the clan?” However, his question was only met with a purr. “It’s quite simple” the white warrior meowed, calming making his way back to the warrior den without looking back. “I know what it feels like to have fallen deeply in love with someone from another clan.”
