Soooo we had to draw a silent comic about a "discovery". What about the fact that mermaids ain't shell-wearing models of the sea and actually prefer drowning their victims to swooning over their snarfblats? C: I adore the Little Mermaid, tis only a quip.
I wanted to draw the mermaids of Coffin Pirate Grima, but I wound up not doing that in order to save for another day. So alohaaaaaa, brozies, and enjoy my... this thing. c:

Love your artwork! I run a weekly YouTube Show "Danica Raven's BiteSize Horror" where the host reads short horror stories sent in by the audience and at the end of each episode we showcase Horror artwork. Would love to feature some of your artwork on the show (with credit and links to your websites ect). If you are interested drop me a message and you can check out our channel on youtube for context on what we do. Keep up the incredible work!!

Fabulous comic ~ short but very intriguing. I admire how there's no border, it all flows so well. AND THOSE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ARE AMAZING.

I love how you do sequential art, like foregoing traditional borders and letting the story actually flow on a whole page, it's AMAZING. I love when artists do this, but you do it better than most of the others I've seen.Β

so is there a huge difference between kelpies and mermaids other than the fact that kelpies can shapeshift and mermaids cant? (or can mermaids do that too idk)

MentallyUnstableMind In reply to DevilRena [2014-02-20 15:32:04 +0000 UTC]
It kind of depends on the folklore. What little knowledge I have about Kelpies comes from Scottish folklore in which one would transform into a horse while waiting for a weary traveler. Once the traveler pet the horse his hand would stick to the skin of the kelpie who would then reveal its true form and drag him to his death (Keep in mind, this is just from a specific myth. They might transform into a variety of creatures). From what I know about mermaids, they usually sang or used their beauty to enchant their victims to get them to jump into the water on their own, or allow themselves to be lured to their watery deaths. They are quite similar, but I don't think mermaids can shapeshift. I might be wrong, though. So if I am, sorry.

Sooo it's been more than a year, but I thought I'd add my two cents. According to the two books of many collected stories from Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, and Wales that I have in my possession, there are several different versions of both mermaids/merfolk and kelpies.
Merfolk, also called morgans (Morgan, Lady of the Lake, starts to sound a bit weird... xD), can form their tails into feet in a number of stories - some don't even have tails in the first place, they just wear long caps (on their heads) that enable them to breathe underwater. Not all of them drown people, or at least not intentionally. Some just don't understand why humans can't breathe water. Some even 'quit their element' and take up residence on land for a while, often for a human lover. Since it's the act of marrying that makes them stay, any gender will do this. They often do go back to the sea, eventually, for a 'short trip' which can last a few years or decades. The merfolk that sing others overboard are actually from the Mediterranean Sea area, originally (but may have come north with the Romans), though the Irish morgans are known to love music so much they beg good musicians to come with them into the sea. Unlike some fey, they can lie, so if they don't specifically give their word and make it a promise, some humans fall for the tricks of the not as nice morgans and end up drowned. There was a myth of one trapping souls, not aware that the humans that died at sea (of other causes) intended to leave. They are also known to be deadly when offended.
Kelpies are generally bad. The book that had stories on them didn't say where, of Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall and Wales, the tales collected there of the kelpies originated, but there were less of those than of the merfolk. Kelpies can change into many shapes - dogs, horses, and humans being their favourites. They always look sopping wet, and often have seaweed on them somewhere, or smell like it. They look half-mad, or their eyes do, but they often have long hair to cover their eyes. If you run into one, it's best to carefully walk away before it sees you, and never climb on its back. If you do, it doesn't matter what shape it's using, the kelpie will not let you get off, and drag you underwater. One myth told of a person who bested a kelpie by promising liquor if he could just get down a minute, and got away when the kelpie was drunk. Most of the tales end in dead humans, though.
Incidentally, the Japanese merfolk, known as ningyo οΌδΊΊι, written with 'person' and 'fish'), in the old myths are said to be rather ugly, like a kind of chubby but disproportioned person merged with a whale. They were also, with a few exceptions, about as dumb as fish, with rather tasty meat, which led to the extinction of most, if not all, of them. :/ (Perhaps the smart ones escaped.)

Just a little tidbit- what many people thought were mermaids were actually dewgongs. The cows of the sea.
I'd prefer a seacow any day.

In Finland, there is creature, called "NΓ€kki" and she was curvy lady, with black long hair and enourmous boobs, that people were calling her to "nipplesack"... My mom used to warn about her, while going near at rivers of lakes..Β she used to sit on huge stone near at her pond, brush hair and wait her victim. Then she dragged him under of water to suck blood and life out of him... This picture reminded me about her :3

Despite the fact that ge dies, the kid in this comic is super cute...
I DON'T HAVE PROBLEMS I SWEAR.
No but forreal man, this is fantastic i love how there aren't clear-cut panels, and how everything is sort of fluid... Like a mermaid swimming!!
But yeah, my character Lizzy is a merperson (though he prefers the term "fishman") and he freaking EATS PEOPLE. Mermaids are freaking terrifying.

Oooooh, that composition! I love how the kid's all enamored and then his happiness is ripped away just as quickly as that second panel (bubble thing). Reminds me a little of when I'd swat at the big air bubbles underwater in the pool.
