Perfectly normal traits taken to the extreme until it corrupts the character. By binding themselves to these fundamental human elements, the Council has been able to feed their dark power from your mere acts of being human. They themselves may not even be immune to their own sins. It is likely their ingrained desires drove them to order the construction of the Dark Machine in the first place. Twisting souls towards sin was not enough, and a direct approach became tantalizing to Hell's rulers.
