Alexander Dumas once described quicksand in the book Les Miserable, as a horrible way to die. It takes its victim, in perfect health in the prime of life, under a blue sky. You scream and claw and plead for help, but still it takes you as birds fly overhead heedless of your horror. First trapped to your thighs, you jettison your load to no avail. Slowly then you are just a bust of a human above the quaking sand, then only a face as it sucks you under and you take your last breath. (Or something like that).
