Kate Lewis | CCEC Samson
2022 Jacaranda Jamboree
Halter (Stallions)
Placed: 4th
"High of 31C. Distant thunder and lightning and gentle rain on and off throughout the day, breaking through the humidity. Cool change in the evening, rain comes in heavy by around 2pm, letting up around 4:30pm."
Small puddles were starting to form in the sand of the outdoor arena as the humid morning brought on a gentle rain. Kate had checked the weather at least ten times hoping the forecast would magically change - she hated the rain - but every time it gave the same prediction. Figures. Scrolling Pinterest as she waited for the sprinkling on the metal roof to come to an end she came across a couple pictures of some nicely decorated button braids and finally she managed to grasp the ambition needed to pull herself from beneath the covers of the bed in the guest cabins. The halter class was fast approaching, but maybe she could get the braids done beforehand and then with any luck they would stay in until the dressage class. After layering a pair of sweats and a hoodie over her show clothes and tying her hair back into a neat bun she was ready to go. She grabbed a couple granola bars for her and Samson on her way out the door and off she went toward the boarding barn.
Samson stood up suddenly from his nest of bedding, ears darting forward as he heard Kate walking down the barn aisle. He shook off a good amount of the shavings clinging to his hair, but some were still tangled in his tail. They were one of the first teams in the lineup for this morning and though that didn't bode well for getting the shavings out of his tail in time, Kate was hopeful they would at least get to compete without getting drenched as the rain was meant to slow down. Samson impatiently pawed the ground as Kate opened the first granola bar. He would have to wait until after his turn in the class to get his grain since she definitely didn't need him channeling any more energy than the rain would be giving him. Patting his neck gently as she fed him the granola bar, Kate went over their plans for the day. "So first I have to groom you and get all of that bedding out of your tail. I don't know why you insist on only laying down before shows, you had the entire day off yesterday and I know you were not that tired.." Samson grabbed at her pants pocket where the other granola bar was as she droned on. He did not like waiting for his grain and was trying to get her attention as he was clearly starving and did not care about what she had to say. Giving him a small nudge she then retrieved his brush and bands from his grooming tote and started working on his mane. She wanted to incorporate more of the purple jacarandas from the mounted orienteering the other day, and had a plan to tie them into his braids similarly to one of the pictures she had found on Pinterest that morning. "After this you'll get another break and you will get the rest of your breakfast, so leave my pockets alone! Then we will do dressage after lunch, and then we will be done. Is that fair? I told you it wouldn't be a bunch, the worst of it is already over." She had hoped. The weather the past two days had been fairly mild, just steady heat, and Samson had really enjoyed the mounted orienteering.
Thunder crashed in the distance and Samson's head shot up, knocking the brush out of Kate's hand. They had done their fair share of schooling in the rain but she had never worked with him while it was thundering. Usually a show would be canceled or postponed, but being the last day of such a large international event she didn't blame them for continuing. It would be a pain to cancel the last few classes especially since most everyone had already arrived and participated earlier in the week. She finished up his braids just in time and quickly stripped off the top layer of her clothes to reveal her purple base layer tucked neatly into her white breeches. The rain had let up for the most part, aside from the stray sprinkle or two, though the thunder was still going off in the distance paired with the occasional flash of lightning. Samson was acting up - which to be fair is not entirely unlike him - he was just usually better behaved at shows. Regardless of what her horse was doing, Kate was determined to make this storm their bitch and she knew that Samson's confidence would soon return as long as she didn't let the weather get the best of her. Upon entering the ring he managed to keep his antics to a minimum by following Kate's lead, occasionally tossing his head or side stepping away from booming thunder and sponsor banners flapping in the wind. It certainly could have gone better, but for their first time showing during a thunderstorm Kate was rather pleased with the young stud.
