Terracotta, a Mudwing, had been lucky. At first. The War of SandWing Succession had stayed mostly away from him and his four sibs, for which he was infinitely grateful. If anything happened to them...

He had always been interested in helping dragons and medical procedures, so he had became the apprentice of the only dragon willing to take him. There weren't many MudWings able to train him, both because most qualified doctors were off in the war, and because most didn't want a trainee from another sib group.

Terracotta was a fast learner. He excelled, especially for his age. But when the War's effects creeped into his village, he and his brothers and sisters were employed into the war. Terracotta still continued helping as a doctor, although he didn't know if he would ever see his teacher again, as she had been employed to a different army.

The War changed him. It had forced him to grow up much faster than he should have. Stolen his youth. Especially because he was a doctor. He saw things that, despite his employment choice, he had never thought he would see. But he just gritted his teeth and bandaged the wounds, the ice and fire blasts, and severed limbs, his life a blur. He was the one who had to deliver the fact of a fatal injury to the patent. Who had to tell the families the devastating news.

There weren't many Mudwing doctors, and he was the only one in his battalion, so he became well known, or at least knew of him. Most just called him Doc. With this came power. No one would pick a fight with him, despite his small size and young age and lacking fighting skills. You just don't mess with Doc. He had earned a respect unlike anything from everyone. He had most likely saved at least one of their sibs, and some dragons Doc had never met before had an undying loyalty to him for that reason. He would go into a state of incredible determination and calm and blankness when treating a patent, his emotions never showing through the brick wall that became his face. When he was like that, he could command dragons twice as old and large as him, and they would listen. They would listen to the healer.

Everyone knew where to take anyone injured. The makeshift cleared area they called the 'hospital' was really just a couple of tents and cots, as well as minimal medicine. Not enough. Not nearly.

Doc would reflect on his life sometimes, and laugh bitterly. Doc. That's who he thought of himself now. Doc. Not Terracotta. It was his entire life, taking over. He would soften though, when he thought of all who he had helped. The lives he had saved. That was why he had started in the first place. Despite everything, he never lost sight of that.
