Description This is seriously something that I have to criticize on so many levels: people asking you if you're alright or not.

Seriously? The people who have to ask that are obviously not the person's good friends if they don't even know. It's alright for strangers... maybe your classmates or coworkers if you don't really know them that well, but I just find that the people who have a reason to cry, don't cry. The people who have no reason at all to cry, bawl out for attention.

Basically, this whole 'Are you alright?' thing puts even your best friends as complete strangers and for people like me, the question silences us. I broke down a little when I got the text that my grandfather died, this summer at camp during class. My friend asked me if I was okay, I told her I was having an allergy reaction.

What can I say? I'm just not the type. :/

Quick, random sketch. Needed a break from studying, and I didn't feel like drawing a realistic human so I settled for an anime-ish look. Might do a digital version someday.

Critique Me?
• Style (Semi realistic shading, anime/cartoon figure) work out well?
• The hands (particularly the one on the right)
• Basic body and face proportions?
• Muscle shape?
• Pencil technique?
• Shading contrast?
• The nails in the eye. (They look like nails, right?) Should I have done something more, like fill up the entire eye with nails for more emphasis or wincing in pain? Or does having it wide open say something more?

I would critique but I never have the time, so I'll just say I like it- the only problem I have with it is that you say it has a slight anime style... it doesn't really to me... not even slightly but it still looks amazing :3

It's totally fine. I just decided to narrow down what I'd like someone to mention for each picture from now on. c:

If you take a look at a realistic human sketch, you'd probably see the difference.

"Are you okay." I only use it because I don't know what else to say. I happen to be terrible when it comes to things like that. I'm kinda antisocial and quiet apparently.

I know most people do like to hear people ask "are you okay?" but it's just a personal opinion that it makes the people you know into strangers. :/

Heh, If we were not in school most of my friends would probably slap me if I said that, so I just try not to make it worse.

This is an incredibly powerful piece. Despite being about the silence of pain, it really speaks to me. It speaks so much that it actually hurts, not in a bad way at all but because it just instigates that feeling. As if I can really feel the emotion behind it, and yet at the same time never truly know exactly the degree of what caused it and how much is slipping past or getting lost in transition.

I'm not sure if the message that comes to me is the one that you intended to convey (and if it isn't feel free to correct me. Art is an expression and opinion-based thing, anyway). What I do feel is that people long to be understood. The people who need to cry long for someone to cry to, the people who want to be left alone want others to know that they prefer to be that way. To understand and to really be able to tell if something (or someone) is alright or not is a really...abstract thing, and it's a skill that not everyone has, even the closest of friends. Yet we still want to be understood because...well, it's something that people long for.

Then there's the question of people who want to understand -- and often times we doubt the validity of wanting to do so when they clearly don't have a clue of what's going on, either. Which is why in real-life relationships, it's easier to tell. You can't pick up these kinds of social cues online. In the real world you have actions and reactions and expressions to read, and when all of those things line up, you'd have to be socially blind not to realize if someone's not alright. [And some people actually are. Some people were made that way; they don't know what it means when someone seems particularly withdrawn or doesn't want to talk. Being ignorant out of not being able to interpret these things is completely understandable] But even when asked that burning question, there's always a part of you that seems to say back, "Well, what do you think?"

As far as critique goes, the subject's left hand could be a little more defined -- if you held up your hand to a mirror as reference and looked at the contours of the thumb and where the palm meets the wrist, it would help tremendously with the anatomy of the hands.
I haven't been watching you for that long, but for sure, your traditional work is great -- it's something about your choice of using pencils and spot-coloring that really makes the atmosphere complete. It gives me the feeling that if you had done this digitally the first time around, it wouldn't have the same effect as the sketchy, monochrome feeling that pencils give.
Nails...they definitely look like nails, and not only that, they look painful! To really drive the point home, the only other thing I would suggest is adding tape over the corners of that Post-It note. It fits the theme and the point you're making to a T.

*Sigh* Thought I might reply with a longer message but I never found the time to do so:

Thanks for critiquing me, I definitely appreciate it although I feel like you missed my point. I mentioned in the artist comment what I was doing though... sorry, I don't really have much else to say. :/
