Just because we think we understand something, doesn't mean we know everything about it. There are anomalies in this world, and we act as though we understand them thoroughly; this is just that: an act. We know that if we drop an object, it will fall, but that's not a total truth. If you fall from a great height, it will kill you; again, not a complete truth.
If ever these anomalies should accumulate enough, the world we live in will become something completely foreign. We'd know nearly nothing.
This world is more anomaly than predictability, or it at least used to be. We know many forces, but one emerged, thus far unknown. The effects of this force brought a majority of the population of the planet to the brink of destruction. Death followed death; destruction followed destruction. The world continued to wither away until a safe haven was finally formed.
Less than 0.1% of the world survived and made it into this fortress. As of now, the Fortex Complex, comprised of approximately 200 square miles, is the only location on the entire planet's surface capable of safely supporting life as we know it. Surrounded by invisible walls for protection, visible walls within the region divide it into cities. The military is most focused in Aekron, as is the source of the Complex' safety: the Iffortux, a residue of that strange force stored deep within a host. There's a problem, though: the Iffortux' host is unknown. All that is known is that he or she resides in Aekron. As a result, no one has been allowed to leave or enter the city.
Until the Iffortux Host is discovered, Aekron, surrounded by guarded walls, remains entirely separate from the already shrouded Complex.
