I agreed. These planes served for a long time in our air force.

I had a discussion with a friend about this jet. We both agree that if it's wings were twice as big as they are, as in both wing span and wing area, there would be no need for the tail wings, it would be more maneuverable, it could carry more fuel and stay in the air longer, it would need only half as long a runway to take off and land and it would still be faster than Mach 2. If you look at my Avro Arrow deviation again, you'll see what I mean. I know the MIG 21, like the Arrow is an interceptor for shooting down bombers, but having good maneuverability increases survivability. What do you think? The Chinese call this interceptor the J-7 for some reason. I think they still use it.

Originally the Fishbed was designed as a low ranged interceptor to shot down the hostile bombers, so it's true. But it's fuelcapacity wasn't so big. Later the russians built other variants of this plane to take more tasks (for example CAP). Anyway i think so that the chinese use still the J-7's, and the always copied the russian jets, just look at the Sukhoi Su-33 and after the J-15.

Out of service?
A bitter shame isn't it

I don't know how shame is it. These planes were old enough, and when we joined the NATO, the most part of our jet fighter fleet (it means MIG-21s, MIG-23s, and MIG-29s) were retired. Now we have 14 Gripens.
