Description
I know I've just opened myself up for all kinds of flaming. Like You're a christian so you shouldn't believe in killing a life.Uh... no.
Actually when they use embryos in stem cell research they get them from fertilization clinics.
Fertilization clinics get a surplus of the mother's ovums in case one doesn't work. Some are implanted in the mother. While the others are stored away. In the storing process some die. If they are not stored they are just simply disposed of in whatever manner they please.
Besides, women lose the ovum every time they have a period.
So why can't researchers use ovums that would otherwise be tossed out or die off of natural causes?
The are also other ways of obtaining stem cells. Like adult stem cells and stem cells created from skin. The last one is something like that. I don't know. Look at the faqs. It'll explain better. Lol. I'm horrible at explaining.
some faqs about stem cell research- www.webmd.com/cancer/features/…
Don't worry I've done a lot more research besides faqs on some website.
Anyways. If you feel the same way please use.
Comments are welcome, but please don't be rude. -.-

You have the right to say what you want, and I do too. I know this sounds like I'm about to flame you, but I support you here. I believe that doing experiments on things that are just going to be wasted is better than just, well, wasting it.

I believe that too. Besides women lose a an unfertilized egg every time they have a period. If that is the case I guess extremists consider all women murders.

I don't know. Maybe. It hasn't been researched enough because funding was cut here in the united states. If that is one thing that Obama did right he restored funding.

I just thought I'd tell you a bit about why Embryonic stem cells are preferred to adult or skin stem cells. Basically Embryonic stem cells can become any kind of living tissue, whereas adult stem cells are limited in what they can become.
In IVF clinics I believe no Embryos are disposed of, they are all stored and frozen. I am firmly of the belief that since these embryos will never become a living child then why don't we use them to help a quadriplegic to recover from a condition which would have ruined his quality of life and shortened it dramatically. And that is only one of the ways stem cells can be used.

I actually read why, but thank you. If I hadn't of read why before I wouldn't have known and you would have taught me. And, I agree. If they aren't going to be used for anything they should go to help someone. I hope that is what you meant. ^.^'

I agree, I also believe that all people have their own opinions, however, my school recently had a day set aside that they encouraged students to wear tape over their mouths in protest of stem-cell research, meanwhile having no day dedicated to support of stem cell. I go to a public school, that I feel is out of place.

I know what you mean. We have had some support days that have made me feel out of place as well. Though, we haven't had any support days against stem cell research, but I wouldn't be in support of not supporting either. ^.^ If that made any sense.

It made perfect sense, I'm not angry with them for encouraging students to do this, but I don't think it is right to do that in public school, after all, most people don't have opinions on the subject, and I would like to see they know both sides.

'Besides, women lose the embryos every time they have a period.'
em·bry·o/ˈembrēˌō/Noun
1. An unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development.
2. An unborn human baby, esp. in the first eight weeks from conception, after implantation but before all the organs are developed.
Its just an unfertilized human egg that is lost, not an embryo. Its an Ovum that is lost each period.
o·vum/ˈōvəm/
Noun: A mature female reproductive cell, esp. of a human or other animal, that can divide to give rise to an embryo usually only after fertilization by a male cell.
I also know this stuff from when I studied child development. Just wanted to correct that....

Genetic manipulation is something I'm strongly against. I'm not going to flame you for your beliefs, but I just think that this could have unforeseen consequences. I think humans are getting ahead of the moral level of "medical treatment." We all have to die eventually, we're meddling with nature a little too much to the point where instead of fixing things we're going to screw things up more.
I'm not trying to disrespect your opinion, you're free to think whatever you want. I just wanted to state my side of things, that's all.

I don't believe in cloning, but I guess SOME stem cell research is okay, depending upon how far people go with it. I'll have to look into it a little more though because I don't know that much about stem cell research.
I also don't think people should be able to choose the trait of their baby, that's a terrible idea.

I think that people are trying to go to far with making "super humans" as I like to refer to them as. And I would hate to have been born knowing that I was merely a science experiment.

Exactly my point... XD... Everytime I hear this topic, I think of Maximum Ride and how the kids were just kept in dog crates for the better part of their child hood.... Now why would anyone want that? The book is fiction, but what it's based on isn't...

I haven't read that book, but my sister did. I think I might yell at the book because of my morals. I'm not even strictly Christian and I still don't like it. Can't we just let nature do as it pleases?

I've read all the books. Except for the newest one. Genetic testing Like that would be horrible. I'm not for that, but I am for curing diseases and improving one's life. There was a man recently that was believed to have his hiv cured through stem cells. I thought that was really cool. ^.^ though, I have to say Patterson is an excellent writer.

Yeah, I agree. I'm glad I talked to both of you (you and lulzlovr). I changed my opinion on stem cell research.
I still think cloning is wrong though, what about you? I would have hated to be born knowing that I was born as an experiment or to give body parts to my "parent" clone or whatever. And what if they mess up? Scientists can't just kill the clone, it's still a human.

Cr1kk3t In reply to FullMoon272 [2011-06-17 04:33:16 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, cloning someone for that purpose would be horrible. I wouldn't be for that. I'm not for cloning at all in the first place, or splicing human with animals. Though, the rest of the research I'm pretty okay with. I believe stem cell research can save and improve lives. I don't see what is so wrong with that. :/ (not saying you see anything wrong with it. just stating. ^.^')
