When mom mutters bitterly to herself
About how hard her life was,
And how goddamn easy we kids these days have it
How we can't even maintain a small standard
I can breathe in deep
Remembering that she
Is only worried about how I will be
In the future.

And so when I get the lecture
And believe I am an incompetent failure
I know I'm not because I am trying,
Despite the fucked up mess "today" is
I'm working in modern times, in my age of youth
Trying to get something worthy out of this life.

Past is not present, it is my life
That lives today
Not yesterday, not what was your time mother...

I know you mean me well
But I am doing what I can
I am trying, so hard to become something.
I don't need you to worry about me this way
Growing into maturity is just a little hard sometimes
I really have to say
That although I'm not the best at rhymes
Life is free-verse poetry.
Let me smooth out and polish my free verse
You won't be disappointed.
