Description So the final assignment for the Traditional Animation course was to animate a character trying to accomplish something with effort. The teacher said she was planning to edit them as a montage (in the end she hasn't) and told us to think about the theme song from "Rocky" ("Gonna Fly Now"). I tried thinking what would be really funny to see inside a montage like this, and decide watching a snail climbing up was it. Then I decided to animate the snail in sync with the song, use that as the beginning of the montage, and make another animation of the snail when he reaches the top, which would be the end of the montage. So after I made most of the animation (you can tell the snail isn't getting anywhere because I was trying to get the timing right) I showed it in class and the teacher wasn't crazy about the fact that there was no middle in this story or that I picked to animate a snail, she said I can do better. So I had to do another animation and with all the other work I had to do, another animation that should be more complex wasn't something I was excited for, especially with even less time to do it.

So I made this rubbery animation you see in the GIF file and this one more well received. I made it rubbery cause the teacher loves follow-throughs (hence when I tend to over-animate everything) and the easiest way to get it without adding hair or tails or something was to make it rubbery. They liked it, but told me to cut the part with the worm coming out of the hammer since they didn't knew what to make of it. I made another version without the worm and another one in the link, where both animations are combined into film and that was what I showed in the last lesson. They liked so much they didn't need to see the version without the worm. I do have to say that the character in the rubbery animation seem to have grown a lot between the first and last frame and difference in side is truly jarring, yet no one notices this (and most people on DA who seen it also didn't notice cause I made a misspel like an idiot  ), and once they do they demand to see the animation again to see how did this happen.

haha I love it! And I liked the worm bit cuz it was unexpected and funny. Your class just sucks
For the full video, the hobo-snail (aka a slug) works great to sound but not so much this 1 imo. Also I really feel like when it says "now go home" something should happen. Like the snail shell falls on him or he gets kicked off the mountain.

The animations are really well done too. Nice principles of animation dude

Thanks, I made some other nice animations too (even better ones in my opinion).
The "now go home" was for the class, I'm always the last one to show his work at class so it was more appropriate there. I'm always the last because I give the funny work there, so it makes for a good dessert, and because I tend to come there thinking I didn't do a good job with my assignment and seeing the other students [usually less succesful] assignments puts me at ease and then I'm a little less worried when my turn to show my work comes. Maybe you're right, maybe they do suck, but it's still not a nice thing to say.

I'm always last (or second to last) because we go alphabetically in my classes. I stand by what I said with something happening at that bit cuz it'd be funny ^_^ And it'd feel like it concludes the story. Besides, why wouldn't you wanna tie the slug's adventure as a metaphor to that of the students? Where they try so hard all semester and then in a blink its all over

And I said they suck in a super half-hearted, joking sort of way. It wasn't meant to be malicious at all and def wasn't an opinion of their skill level as animators (even if it was possible for me to make that judgement after seeing their work -which I haven't- I would never say that and crush someone's spirits like that. I do my best to be supportive to anyone going into animation and art) Like I said, it was a joke. About them not understanding why the worm was funny. That surprised me because the worm is what made this animation stand out and made me want to comment in the first place. Cuz it made me laugh

I'm very happy that it made you laugh .
If we were going in alphabetical order I'd still be last in almost every class I go to (if they were going by first name anyway).
The slug as a metaphor for the class? LOL XD
It's pretty funny cause my tradional animation teacher told me several time to slow down and that I'm trying too much here and there, I'm fast slug!
Or at least I was cause I haven't made much work lately
They probably didn't find it funny cause when they were younger they all took the "sane" bus, while I got hit by the "sane" nbus, fell with my head on a screw, got up, and then I took the "sane" bus like everyone else while still having the screw stuck in my head because I like having a screw in my head. How's that for a metaphor?

oh my god lol xD but seriously, if you're gonna be an animator you need to be a little less than sane anyways And don't worry, we all hit dry spells for a while. Your motivation will return Whenever I hit a block I try to do something else for a while.
ie: even when I have art block and don't want to do digital stuff I can still fill a sketchbook easily. Or even if I don't wanna draw I can feel like animating

Don't worry, just cause I said haven't made much work lately doesn't mean I haven't drawn anything yesterday,
or today,
Or that I plan to do more tommorow.
You'll have to wait and see, no new animation though, maybe later when I get the momentum back and feel like I can make dozens of drawings a day.

How did you do this?

You mean animating?
You make a lot of drawings, you scan them (you don't have to do that when you work digitally), you put them in some animation or editing program, find the frame rate that suits you best (you usually it's decide before animating) and then you export it as a Mov, MP4 or in this case GIF since Deviantart doesn't let me upload Mov or MP4 files.
There is obviously a lot more when it comes to learning the technique and such, but this is the basic idea.
Did it help?

Yeah it definitely helped!
I'm trying to build myself up to give it a try, I think it's really cool that you can do stuff like this

It's best to start with something simple like animating lines, balls and what not before trying something complex, trying to animate something too complex tend to scare people away from this before they even finish their animation. Good luck to ya and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need any.

Thank you for the advice! I'm trying to bring some characters to life so I've got myself a light box and a lot! Of paper hahaha I'll be sure to show you once it's done
