Description Hey guys, back for another big ol' perler. This one is Ruto, the first Abysswolf sprite I've ever made. If you haven't heard of him, he's a legendary spriter amongst the beading community, oddly enough it's almost like a rite of passage to make one of his insane sprites for many beaders. So go check him out, it's unreal how much detail he can put into his pixel art.

I had a really scary moment while ironing this, I had to do it in two pieces since it was too big to comfortably bead from where I sit at this table. So I lined it up and ironed, and somewhere in the middle I must have bumped it and the tiny crease in the two became a huge gap. Luckily since the plastic was still hot I was able to forcibly bend the entire thing into the position I needed it to be and set it in. And luckily again it came out alright, the mistake is hardly noticeable, but if you look closely just above the navel you can see the miss-aligned beads.

Next one will be a commission, much smaller at around 1'x2', but it should be pretty awesome since it will be a custom sprite I'm working on right now.

That's it from me hope y'all have a great day!

That's really awesome. Did you use just one brand of bead (Hama, Perler, Nabbi ?) or did you mix two or three of them together to have all the colors ?

Craeter In reply to FireEnze [2015-11-09 20:56:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, for this one I used hama blue and everything else was perler. I try to use only perler when possible since hama and nabbi don't melt fully closed, but that fact doesn't matter if you're displaying the unironed side anyways.Β

Thank you for your fast respond
I prefer the unironed sideΒ too, but with large piece it's feel like the beads won't stay together. Maybe I didn't it well...

Anyway, thanks again and keep on doing cool things

If you fully fused the beads on one side (till the point they melt into squares not circles) it *usually* has enough strength to hold. Even if it doesn't you can always mount it to canvas or foamcore to be super safe. Good luck on your ventures!

Thanks, yeah I was surprised team ninja pulled it off so well, I was afraid of another Metroid Other M episode. Abysswolf has been spriting the new Smash Bros characters as well, he's almost done and will be uploading those here soon be on the lookout cause a lot of them are incredible.

I have just started the whole perler bead thing and seeing stuff like this just looks insane. Out of curiosity how big is this piece?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Craeter In reply to Sireanna [2014-10-26 20:38:59 +0000 UTC]

It's about 2.5'x2.5' I don't have any measuring tape on hand but that's my estimate. Good to hear that you're starting to bead, if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sireanna In reply to Craeter [2014-10-26 22:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Thats so big. Heh I can barely handle something that fills up more then a couple of the small square peg boards. I am always terrified I am going to bump it. When you are working on something htis big do you print of the pixilated picture you are working from or how do you know how to lay down the beads?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Craeter In reply to Sireanna [2014-10-27 01:05:39 +0000 UTC]

I just open the sprite in MS paint then zoom all the way so I can see the pixels. It takes some planning ahead of time to figure out the palette and the best way to go about making it. I realized for this one I'd need to make it in two pieces since it was slightly too big to do in one piece on my table. My advice is get practice making small stuff that fits on only a few pegboards and slowly work your way up to bigger stuff. If it worked for me I'm sure it could work for you too.

Thanks Sulley, I appreciate the kind words. Honestly I'm happy it wasn't a complete disaster and I was able to catch and fix it while it was still hot. Had I noticed the mistake a few minutes later I might not have been able to fix it and the whole thing might have been ruined, luckily that was not the case though. Next time I do one of these in multiple pieces I'm going to be extra careful.

OddishCrafts [2014-10-15 23:04:45 +0000 UTC]

A few questions. Is this perler or Hama? And how do you iron something so big? Β I've never been able to do it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Craeter In reply to OddishCrafts [2014-10-16 02:03:02 +0000 UTC]

It's a mix of Perler, Hama, and Nabbi, which is the main reason why I'm displaying the unironed side. Ironing big pieces is challenging any way you look at it, a lot can go wrong. Really it just takes practice to figure out how big of an area you can work on at a time and to mitigate wrinkles and warping and such. I've been making these for a little while now, if you're new I suggest starting small and working your way up slowly to bigger stuff. That's what I did and it seemed to work for me anyways.Β

OddishCrafts In reply to Craeter [2014-10-16 11:00:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. One more question: Do you use the masking tape method?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Craeter In reply to OddishCrafts [2014-10-16 17:30:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes of course, the tape saves your pegboards from warping and lets you reuse the same pegboards for other parts of the sprite. Basically it just saves you money, I've bought 20 pegboards and will likely never buy any more of them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OddishCrafts In reply to Craeter [2014-10-16 20:13:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I think I'll finally try it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Craeter In reply to OddishCrafts [2014-10-17 00:40:39 +0000 UTC]

Keep in mind if you're doing full fuses you'll need to poke holes in the middle of the tape over each bead or they won't melt closed. If you're doing partial fuses however no need for the holes, good luck!

Yes, abysswolf-senpai bow down to his excellence, he never fails to disappoint. I really need to start beading smaller stuff, mainly just so I can get something uploaded here every week or other week. But these big projects are soo fun I can't stop makin em D:

Oh I hear you. I finished Venus and now I'm on the hunt for my next big piece.Β

Although there's a local shop around here that wants to display my work... I should probably work on that stuff first. Blehh.

Posting stuff regularly is so hard though when all you want are big pieces. T-T

You should try going to local comic book shops and mom and pop video game stores and whatnot. A lot of them here are willing to at least display artist work, if not buy stuff!Β

Craeter In reply to PerlerzByRex [2014-10-16 02:06:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I can do that, I only know of one local game shop but next time I'm in the neighborhood I can definitely drop by and show them some phone pictures or something, thanks for pointing that out!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PerlerzByRex In reply to Craeter [2014-10-17 15:53:32 +0000 UTC]

From my experience, all you need to do is bust out a Majoras Mask and people go crazy for some reason? Not sure what it is about the mask that says "buy me" but game stores (and all of the customers in there) love it.

And comic book shops are fun too. A giant Wolverine, Gambit, Wonder Woman or whoever and they're yours
