For OC-training Task #5: Personal Life. I chose to depict Makoto interacting with an important character for both this task and Task #6: Enjoyment.

Setting Notes:

The Baiqiao (白橋, "white bridge"), Kurosawa (黒澤, "black marsh"), Rhys ("dragon"), and Rosenfeld ("field of roses") Families are formally referred to as the Royal Families. With the exception of the Kurosawa Royal Family, each Royal Family possesses a bloodline ability that is passed down from generation to generation, making their Instance users significantly more powerful than average. Each family governs its own realm (Axon for Baiqiao, Process for Kurosawa, Range for Rhys, and Roentgen for Rosenfeld) and hold immense amounts of power and influence.

Realms are vast in size, and are composed of multiple planes of existence called Sandboxes. These Sandboxes are self-contained and vary in size and habitability (some are safe from Nils, others are completely overrun). In order to enter a Sandbox, one must obtain the proper Port Authorization, which can only be granted by the Royal Families and their trusted associates.

The desire of some family members to retroactively revoke Port Authorizations demonstrates the severity of the threat posed by Nils, hostile beings that possess the ability to convert Instance users into one of their own. When an Instance user is converted into a Nil, a process known as Nilling Out, they are granted a massive boost in power and Memory at a terrible price. Tormented by an overwhelming urge to Nil Out all sentient beings, they turn on teammates, friends, and loved ones without hesitation.

Character Notes:

Makoto Kurosawa (誠黒澤)/Zhen Xinyi (真心意, multiple meanings - two possible translations are "true intentions" and "true purpose") doesn't have much of a life outside of his duties as an Imperial Prince/executive member of Thread. A pacifist who sees killing as a last resort, he tries to take the diplomatic route whenever possible - even if it means associating with potentially dangerous people. Some of his adopted siblings see Makoto's attitude as naive at best and traitorous at worst. None of them know the true motivations behind his actions, or the reason behind his enormous appetite.

Baiqiao Yaoshe (白橋妖蛇, meaning “demonic snake of the white bridge”) is a high-ranking prince from the Baiqiao Royal Family. He is clearly a very nice and not at all shady guy xD. Yao and Makoto/Xinyi met before the start of the main storyline, shortly after the latter joined the Kurosawa Royal Family.

Additional Notes: Yao is very fun to draw but very difficult to write, I ended up rewriting his dialog many times.

I ended up habitually writing for the Chinese names, and for the Japanese names. Technically, I should be introducing Makoto as Kurosawa Makoto. I guess it's partly because most of the named characters I've introduced so far have Kurosawa as their fake surname. That will change in the future .
