Description After a bit of a break, I'm back, but not with a new doll - this time it's other people who will have to do the work

This is a tutorial/beading pattern for my R2-D2 bead doll  which I posted earlier this year. It's meant as a thank you for staying with me for one year of bead dolls and will hopefully be of interest for some of the beaders among you - and perhaps also for some of you who have asked me about getting started with beading 3D figures.

In addition to the beading pattern here, which requires some beading experience, I've also posted a Beginner's Guide  to this tutorial with lots of step-by-step pictures, which explains the basic technique and the more difficult parts of the beading process.

Speaking of difficult, making this tutorial turned out to be far more challenging than I expected, seeing as I'd never made one before. I chose to make a tutorial for Artoo partly because he's a far simpler doll to bead than the human-shaped ones, but still, this took me far longer than I'd thought.

If you have any questions or find any errors, please let me know, and if you make a doll based on this tutorial and have any pictures, drop me a note, because I'd love to see! If you want to share this tutorial with other beaders, please link back or reblog and do not reupload, as I want all potential questions to end up in the right place.

Happy beading!

Do you mean the pdf download of the link to the beginner's guide? I just checked both, and they seem to be working fine for me.

Thank you. . May I ask which software did you use to create the pattern ?

I'm using Inkscape , which is a free vector-based graphics programme. It took me a while to figure out all the functions I need, but it's definitely worth it.

Have fun beading

Let me know if there are any problems with the pattern or instructions - I tried to be as precise as I can, but since it's my first tutorial, I'm not sure how clear it actually is for someone who doesn't have access to the inside of my head

Thanks

I`m on page 5 by now (started yesterday, at a beading meeting with friends), and it`s very good to understand.
Just one little point: You used silver and silverlined crystal beads. I´ve printed the pattern and in the printed version I can`t say which color is which. Perhaps you could use a bit more different colors ^^ (I´ve used only one silver color, so it`s no problem for me.)

Pictures will follow

Thanks for letting me know! I'm a bit surprised about the problem with the silver and silverlined beads because I printed out the pattern before I posted it, and the colours were clearly distinguishable. So I guess it might depend on the printer? I guess I'll have to find a different way to mark the silverlined beads then (there's only few of them anyway) since changing the colour alone might not actually help if someone else's printout looks different from mine.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures

Thanks again for this great pattern, here are the pictures of my R2-B2: picture1  picture2
I´ve changed some minor details, I never keep that strict to patterns

Perhaps I´ve understood the first step wrong: Did you use any silverlined beads in the first step? I couldn`t find any. In later steps yes, but in the first step none. But in the color list next to the first step, there are silverlined beads, but not in the beading diagram. In later steps, there ist no problem with the color, but as I couldn`t find any silverlined beads in the first step, I thought the colors were to similar. And no, this didn´t depend on the printer, I had the same problem with the PDF.

There are two silver-lined beads in the first step - one at the intersection of 42 and 43 and one at the intersection of circles 67 and 68. I'm not sure how I could change the colour to make the difference clearer - I already have two different shades of grey for the silver and grey opaque beads, and white is not available either. Maybe I could change the edge colour to make the difference clearer - I need to finish the beginner's guide anyway, maybe I can find a way to fix this.

Ah, now I´ve found them! Perhaps you could write a sentence in the text and point out where these two beads are? Or you could make the center of the beads a lot darker. Just be careful that there are still lighter edges and not only the dark center!

I'm still trying to figure out what works best - I'll probably stick with changing the edge colour, since this should really make the beads stick out in the pattern since all other colours have black edges.
