It's a great combo as long as the light is OK. It's a little slow to AF in low light situations, that's my only complaint.

I am betting without the 2x on it is very fast all round? good that it still auto-focuses, my 100-400 is manual focus only with a 1.4 or 2x onit.

Oh yeah, the 300mm is a seriously fast lens even with the 1.4x it's lightning fast. The AF when using the 2x TC is about the same speed as the Canon 100-400mm.

Thanks, yes they are introduced. Not normally my thing but these birds are just so hard to get close to I was happy with this one.
