Description Drawing 100 Things I Love in Comics #6 - Astérix le Gaulois by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo

I first read Asterix much later than I should have. The first time I saw it, when I was probably 8 or 9 years old, it was on the same spinner rack at the local public library where I discovered Tintin. I immediately fell in love with the latter (subject to a future installment in this series), which made the former an annoying decoy (being the same size and shape) when I was searching for Tintins I hadn't read yet. It was only several years later that I finally bit the bullet and read an Asterix book, only to discover the brilliant cartooning of Uderzo and the (at the time only half understood) wit of Goscinny. The current scene is from the tenth volume in the series, Astérix légionnaire, first published in a collected volume in 1967.

Uderzo's mastery of character, through design, facial expressions, and especially body language makes him a genius. Recreating his figures, you can actually feel the joy that he must have felt when you draw them.

This was an interesting drawing challenge after the frustration of Dick Tracy. While it still wasn't perfect at the end, I felt that I got a bit better at aping Uderzo's inking style as I went along. All in all, a satisfying and edifying exercise.

Drawn by hand on a Kamvas Pro 16 using Krita.
