Description There's been a lot of Vector portrait type things loitering on DA so I thought I'd join in
...and yes - I am a child of the 80s

Illustrator CS using a lot of shape blends.

It does need to be viewed full sized to appreciate it. SO DO IT!!!

I was going to say a gorgeous 80's girl from your avatar but now you've changed it again.

I totally recognise the character but I can't quite place it - 'Sally' is popping in my head but it could be unrelated. Please put me out of my misery.

Do you use Adobe Illustrator and do you know how to use the pen tool?

That's what I use and if you do, I could do a little video tutorial for you on the starting to vector this pic - [link] (which is easier the typing the beast out).

...although t it's most basic level, I use the 'shape blending' tool - there, that's an easy one to write after all.

GothicVampireFreak In reply to CraigJohn [2011-07-21 10:00:44 +0000 UTC]

I do have Illustrator and I do know how to use the pen tool
I went on a Graphic Design course for two years so I know some skills and as you can see from my gallery, I've gone on Illustrator a lot more recently. I have Illustrator CS5.
I can go around an image or whatever using the pen tool, but I don't know much about 'shape blending', is that where it looks like you used a gradient?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CraigJohn In reply to GothicVampireFreak [2011-07-22 01:42:47 +0000 UTC]

In that case, it'll be a very short video going over the shape blending tool (which is the one that makes it look like a gradient).

I did toy with the idea of using your 'Joy' image because you look gorgeous but your 'Russet' image is simpler to vectors and is already stylised too.

I'll possibly be doing it tomorrow for you.

Okay, I've started it ...but it's very late and I should have waited till I wasn't so tired.

Lot's of rambling and more than a little screwing it up. I am better than that - honest.

Part one has a little bit on the Shape Blending tool but if you want to go further than that, on your own head be it! I then start to vector you're gorgeous portrait: 'Joy'. After getting things wrong and more rambling, I decided to leave it there for the night... but I ended up staring at you smiling and I changed my mind and thus begins part two!

I had the right idea stopping at part one and I eventually realised that myself and so I stopped part two as well.

Hopefully when I start again, I'll not have to scrap what I've done already! Things always look different when you look at them after a break.

I skipped through the videos and I saw that the compression on them made the 'blending' look more like 'stepping' but the actual file looks blended and to prove it, here's where I left off at the end of part 2 - [link]

Part one is here - [link]
And part two, if you really want to be further bored is here - [link]
I've sent these links so you can watch them in your browser if you wanted.

There'll be more to come! Well, I'll complete the vector, but whether you want to have a video of it as well is up to you.

You are so lovely!

Thank you so much for this! The first video was so helpful and I cannot believe I did not see that tool before haha I must have been blind! The video was also very entertaining and I have already learnt quite a lot from it. I am a visual learner, so things like this do help me.
I am yet to see the second part, but I shall do that sometime soon

I would love more! Bring on more! I would also love a video as well to see it all done, but it is completely up to you. I do not want to take up anymore of your time than I already have, don't waste the day away for me

Thank you again for this!

CraigJohn In reply to GothicVampireFreak [2011-07-25 11:47:55 +0000 UTC]

Well in that case, I will gladly video the continuation!

...and thank you, but I'm no where near as lovely as you are! It's very easy to do vectors of gorgeous women as I really don't mind spending time constantly looking at you while I'm working on it.

I'm not feeling too good at the moment so I may not be able to continue it today - but I WILL soon!!

We will need to be doing some layer masking for the mouth and eyes so you may find that informative too. And obviously entertaining too as I get it all wrong again and again!

You're very welcome by the way!

I think you might change your mind if you found out the quality of TV back then - and computers for that matter!
Game console? hardly!

When I was a lad, we had a stick and a hoop to play with!

blackxdinosaur In reply to CraigJohn [2007-02-08 17:13:33 +0000 UTC]

I don't give a rip for television.

Game consoles? Pah.

Computer I might mourn over for a week or two.

But the music is worth it.

Plus, I could learn to play with a stick. xD
