Chairs could be crafted like this. Unfortunately, I have no room for a crafting table picture, so here's a rundown.
The top row is completely blank.
The middle row can either be wooden planks, cobblestone, sandstone, leather or regular stone. It cannot be mixed together.
The bottom row consists of the following in this order: Stick, blank, stick.
You know what I mean?
And instead of 'chair', call it a 'stool', because it looks like a stool.
