I've been told that this is most often the first mod that aspiring ponymakers attempt. Strangely enough, I actually didn't try this until after I'd made a few completely repainted and re-haired customs. XDButyeah. This is Pinkamena, or "Crazy Pinkie." She was fairly simple to make. All I had to do was repaint her eyes and straighten her hair (which still refuses to straighten completely ugh). It's probably not visible in the pictures, but I actually painted one pupil slightly smaller than the other. I think that kind of adds to the insane look.
Acrylic paints used:
Apple Barrel "White"
Anita's "Black," "Aegean Blue"
Sealed with Aleene's "Right-On" clear acrylic finish gloss

She looks great! I love the eyes. Crazy is very much captured lol My first custom had been a Derpy, who consisted of an AJ head and tail and a RD body. The remaining body parts went on to be an OC Earth pony with rainbow hair.
You mentioned the difficulty in getting it straight? Something that may help would be this [link] I's a pretty good tutorial that lists a bunch of different ways to style hair including Pinkimena, Twilight, and just about everypony. Another good tutorial set would be [link] parts 1 and 2 (the link to 2 is in the description). I've used them both for dinking around with mine for numerous miscellaneous photography projects. I've found them very helpful and informative.

Yupp NP!
Around here the most common ones are RD, Fluttershy, and Twilight. The royal find is a Rarity (in any form) that isn't a Glimmer Wings. I drove all the way to the Meijer a few cities over (about 45 mins) just to find one! And part of RD went to my first custom (Derpy) and the rest of her went to an as-of-yet-unnamed Earth pony. I WOULD have nice shots of her up by now but NOOOOOO. My rotten little orange butt decided that she didn't like Unnamed's hair and that she'd look better on the floor with a doo that I have to redo.
