Description
In hindsight, the manager of the cafe decided that maybe hiring robots to replace his human waiters was not such a good idea. He had hoped that they would be faster and more efficient than their human counterparts, which, to an extent, they were. They were fast, but although their ability to jump high and far meant they could get around the Cafe quickly they had a terrible habit of crashing into the low ceiling.
They never made errors with the orders unlike the human staff, but despite their excellence at matching orders to the correct tables they had an awful habit of leaving a trail of crumbs and spilt tea in their wake. When the food and drink arrived, there was usually only half of it left.
The manager had expected to save money and time because his robot waiters would not require lunch hours like the humans did, but the manager was mortified to learn that every five hours the robots needed to change their oil and fill up on expensive petrol - this took an hour - what the manager saved on wages he lost on petrol.
So the human staff were hired back and the robots were given a job that they were better suited for. They were far more adept at home deliveries and got the products to the customer's houses in record time. (but the damage to nearby trees and bridges was a big problem)
The manager learnt very quickly that sending a robot away with a lovely, hot cup of tea would result in tea splattered paths, trees, and passersby while the customer would receive only an empty cup. From then on, the cups had tightly sealed lids. So long as the food and drink was well packaged it arrived in an acceptable state.
The manager stuck with it and despite the problems he was pleased and relieved to find that home delivery sales tripled thanks to the leaping waiters.
After all, who wouldn't want to have their food delivered by robot?

Wonderful work, and I loved the story you had to go with it! Like the perspective most of allβit's like the viewer is just walking along when suddenly there's a robot leaping over them.

Clever...! I never thought to depict a man's thigh like that. Needless to say a mechanical mechanical man.

You put some real thought into this. I have a character that uses a similar springy type of shoe I reckon I should post her. You really excelled with this I love the mechanics and the suite put together your a fantastic brainy artist.

When the Olympic Torch went through the town where I live there were people with Skyrunners and I was really impressed. It was seeing them that inspired this picture. Soon as I got home I googled 'stilts' until a pic of skyrunners popped up - I didn't even know what they were called before then! I would like to try wearing some but I think i'd be too scared of falling over! What are they like to run in?

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I stopped using deviant art for a while because I forgot my pass... :/ ... But the feeling of jumping and running on skyrunners change as you master them more and more. In the beginning I felt like my legs weight a ton and it was hard to walk straight. After 3 days of non stop practice my legs had swollen and turned a bit purple under the knees. It was still fun to wear them even though it was tough walking in them. I made a week long break then and let my legs rest a bit. Β I tried to jump after that and it wasn't that to learn... After I started jumping and running with it, it was almost like what I imagine it would feel like jumping on the moon. The feeling of going up in a plain is similar to the start of a jump and the landing is like the landing of a regular jump but much softer and it pushes you forward.

Sounds like it must take a lot of practice! They look really fun though.Β
How do you get up while wearing them? and how do you get down again for that matter - without falling over of course! It must hurt a lot when you do fall, you're so high up! Do you have matts down to soften the fall a bit?

No, I didn't have mats... I practiced in my driveway. I usually got on and off 'em by sitting on my fence (it has stone pillars at just the right hight ) . But even without the fence I always had something to lean on when getting on or off... also I never fell, which surprises me just as much as anyone...
