Description I've decided to do a series of portraits based on characters from four of the six Star Trek series (excluding The Animated Series and Enterprise). I'm calling this series The Outsiders. The characters are those that represent the strange, foreign, alien, and yet, in their own ways, fully embody humanity.

This series not only affords me the opportunity to draw portraits of some of my favorite Star Trek characters, it also serves as my own personal little tribute to Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett, whose creations have influenced my life so much. May they float in peace.

Portrait number two is Data. When TNG came out, he was sometimes referred to as the "Spock" of the series. However, where Spock had a background of both Vulcans and humans, Data was created, and therefor has no "people" or "homeworld." Aside from Dr. Soong and a couple of messed up predecessors, Data had no family. Also, what made him different from Spock was his constant and overt desire to be human. His inability to become perfectly human, and his continuing struggles and aspirations, were the things that ultimately made him human.

Drawing Data was another first for me. I really adore Brent Spiner. He's one of my favorite actors. Though, I must say, he has an odd-shaped head. Seriously. I kept having to erase and redraw his forehead and jaw because they just didn't look right. In the end, I kept some off-looking lines and they turned out to be pretty accurate. Damn you Brent and your awesome yet misshapen head.

Star Trek and Data are (c) Gene Roddenberry

OKAy so you're not the ONLY one who thinks Brent has a weird head! I've always thought his nose looks like it got broken in an accident when he was young or something. I think that's probably what happened, that or it's just the way he was born.

It's not a bad thing, though, I still think he's pretty handsome. You've done an amazing job capturing him exactly.

I love that questioning look he does! It's almost like he's an innocent child trying to fill the need for knowledge.

Another great piece. I love how it captures him perfectly.

It made me laugh how you mentioned his misshapen head, when my dad was younger he would get stopped and asked if he was Brent Spiner on multiple occasions. They said it was all in the face. lol

Really really really? Now I want to see what your dad looks like. I love Brent Spiner lookalikes (I had one as a teacher for a few weeks).

And thank you.

I hear ya! What I found really difficult to draw was his mouth - it's got that really sexy yet impossible to draw shape to it. Takes me several tries!

This is an awesome picture!!

LOL! "Damn you Brent and your awesome yet misshapen head." For some peculiar reason, that really made me giggle
Anyway...this is a really great drawing!! Along with a very neat idea
I love the way you drew his mouth. I can never get that quite right...
And I too love Brent Spiner. You would have to be a fool not to see his talent and personality!

BTW love your signature (the Odo quote!) His relationship with Kira was another one of those vastly interesting things to me (particularly because I didn't think she really deserved him, but was oddly eager to see them get together XD)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

CravenLunatic In reply to TheGreatUndefeatable [2010-01-24 02:28:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, lol. It's so true, though. And I have to wonder if Brent himself, with his intense sarcastic wit, would find that at all amusing. XP Oh, his mouth, don't even get me started. I love his mouth. I just couldn't let myself get it wrong.

Hm, Odo and Kira... meant to be together, lol. But I love Odo, he's my favorite. :3 Thanks for the comment and the fave.

TheGreatUndefeatable In reply to CravenLunatic [2010-01-24 04:47:24 +0000 UTC]

LOL! No problem Yes, his mouth truly is a thing of beauty. One of the things that makes his entire face (his entire BEING) so attractive XD

I absolutely adoooore Odo!! He was my third fave, preceded only by Quark and Garak XD Er, and Maybe Weyoun. Him and Weyoun were in about the same spot, really XD *is a dork*

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

CravenLunatic In reply to TheGreatUndefeatable [2010-01-24 07:54:25 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh I love Quark too, and Weyoun and Garak. Actually, I love everybody on DS9 (except maybe Kai Winn). After Odo, I have trouble picking who I like most. I think I love them all the same amount, but in different ways and for different reasons, lol. It's like trying to pick which of your kids you love most. Can't be done.

*is also a dork and a total and unapologetic NERD*

TheGreatUndefeatable In reply to CravenLunatic [2010-01-24 14:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Haha, there were times that Kira could actually quite get on my nerves...but there were others that I completely adored her <3

It's hard to find people who like DS9 at all, mostly all you find on dA are the TOS or TNG fans. Hardly anyone has ever even really given DS9 a second thought, let alone watched it thoroughly (even though it's easiest one of the best series in the show)

But yeah, really impossible to pick a FAVORITE favorite, or even a character that you dislike. Even among the bad guys ! Except for Kai Winn (i.e. the joke in my house "You're so fail you're Winn!" Really stupid XD) Except around the end. Then Gul Dukat started bothering me.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

CravenLunatic In reply to TheGreatUndefeatable [2010-01-24 23:12:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I did get a bit tired of her being so freaking clueless about Odo, but I forgive her. She's so awesome most of the time.

I know, there are so many TOS fans, and quite a few TNG fans, and even a decent number of Voyager fans, but DS9 is kind of treated like Enterprise, which is frighteningly unfair. I mean, DS9 was a masterpiece.

Haha, that fail/Winn thing is AWESOME. XDD

TheGreatUndefeatable In reply to CravenLunatic [2010-01-25 00:09:36 +0000 UTC]

LOOOL! I think that a lot of people couldn't grasp the complexities of the show, or the uniqueness of the characters, thus dooming it to un-watched-ness

Oh, and his 'boxkite' ears. You're wonderful, bravo on this!

He looks so lovely in your style! He seems 'younger'. ^__^
You are right, anyway... Brent Spiner is not physically perfect, he also has that long nose, but when he plays Data I swear for me HE IS THE SEXIEST MAN IN THE WORLD! I keep watching and watching the same scenes again and again and I keep wondering HOW THE HELL is it possible that he looks SO DAMN perfect! *รง*

Thank you so much. Yes, Brent Spiner is incredibly sexy, even though his facial features are odd. I love his long nose.

I do the same thing when I'm watching Rene Auberjonois in anything.

sir-zeke In reply to CravenLunatic [2010-01-24 02:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Really? i thought it was a horrible movie, it made the Romulans seem silly, it gave Data a Retarded brother, they killed off one of the main characters for no good reason, it was overall amazingly contradictory to the series, and they brought back wesley even though he dropped out of starfleet to go with "The Traveler",

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

CravenLunatic In reply to sir-zeke [2010-01-24 03:21:52 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I disagree about the Romulans. B4 was pretty ridiculous by himself but was kind of necessary to the overall theme of the film (being that one's reflection is not necessarily the same as oneself). Bringing back Wes didn't strike me as too far-fetched. I mean, if he's a Traveler now, he can pretty much be wherever he wants to be at any given time... a bit like Q, lol.

But really the part I disagree with you most on is "they killed off one of the main characters for no good reason." Data had to die. He said himself in Time's Arrow that the idea of his own mortality was comforting. It made him more human. And for him to die saving Picard was the perfect follow-up to Picard saving Data in First Contact.

At least, that's what I think, lol. I know a lot of fans were unhappy with Nemesis, but I couldn't love it more. ^^ Unless maybe they had released the full version of Data singing Blue Skies on the soundtrack. XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

sir-zeke In reply to CravenLunatic [2010-01-24 13:09:14 +0000 UTC]

I thought Data's death was to much like spock's, he sacrificed himself for the crew, and now there is another one with all his memories hidden somewhere.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

CravenLunatic In reply to sir-zeke [2010-01-25 00:14:13 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I never noticed that, but you're kind of right. Except the Spock we got back would eventually be Spock. I don't think B4 will ever be Data. That was kind of the point of the movie.
