Description
The wind howled over the dunes like a fading memory...Bleary-eyed, he stood silent. The man gazed at the expanse before him, and mused that the sheets of sand might be spread across sleeping giants. The sand would cover them head to foot, blanketing them from the freezing night's cold. Once upon a morning, the stars would be taken down and replaced with strings of sunlight, like a woman changing her jewelry. The giants would then arise from their slumber, and would go about the day gently moving mountains. A smile cracked his dry lips as he thought of a young girl who would have been delighted with such a tale.
His royal sister had been kidnapped by a gang of roving thieves, and he swore to return home only with her in hand. The youngest of seven sons, he did not feel his presence would be as sorely missed as that shining star of the kingdom, Sahiri Anai. And so, he found himself wandering the desert, tracking the hideouts the thieves were infamous for lording over. One such lair stood behind him, and he turned to it. It had been abandoned mere hours before his arrival, but the wind's howls were becoming more feverish and the sky dark. Continuing the chase at this hour would spell his demise.
He entered the base of the dwelling, splashing sand onto silk carpets. Though his eyes were heavy and sore, he slovenly pulled toward him a broken sandal, determined to keep his feet protected should he need to flee quickly. By the dim light of his lamps, he worked to repair the straps, examining both the delicate patterns laced onto his shoe and his soft, girlish hands. He less-than-fondly reminisced of his purported deftness with the needle, but not with stallions. His father had been so displeased to find that his frail son favored embroidery to handling hawks. The hours wafted by in bitterness. With the last stitch, he replaced his sandal, and gazed wistfully at the distant dunes. Deciding that he ought to take a lesson from the giants, he gave into a dreamless sleep.
