Description Out of the cross-hatch

these pieces evolve on their own...this one is a paste-up with a little photopaint cloning but most are done straight, on typing paper(This use to get me in trouble with a gallery owner...but I prefer it's texture) and a cheap pen(bic, papermate...ect)..I've tried repidographs... but they clog all the time and I hate to fuss with them, if a cheap pen gives me trouble I just toss it.

I lost the stylus for my Axim so I've been doing mostly hand work lately....I have to wait a week for some new stylus's...I miss my PPC...it's my main computer besides my Acer One netbook...I'm trying to get totally portable..

It was paste up as well...I used Corel Photopaint to put it together...

I've thought of trying that in GIMP! Have you not tried your hand with GIMP yet! Open Source like Blender - so free!! Very well featured and a good alternative to Photoshop! I was reading about your problems with Corel Photopaint somewhere!

I tried Gimp years ago before I tried Blender...I don't remember much about it I could never figure it out... then I tried Wings3d and got stuck, but when I came to Blender I fell in love....it was exactly what I wanted///today I downloaded Daz (I have no idea what Daz is all about)and Bryce....will play with those...but I think I'll give Gimp a try again...you have much experience with Gimp? I thought Gimp was a 3d program...
anyway...I have my plate pretty full...when my kids tell me they're bored I at them in amazement and go"With all there is in the world how could you possibly be bore?"

Gimp is all I use now! No it's Photoshop's best free alternative! So a graphics programme not 3d, very feature rich and works a treat with my little Wacom tablet.

That's what I say to our kids!!

I didn't know Gimp as freeware...with the tablet it works pretty well? Ho about smudge and sharpen? with Corel Photo paint the smudge is pretty sloppy compared to the older version of Photopaint...and sharpen is almost non existent on any image of any size. Plus the cut and paste system is totally goofy...I just need a simple program. So I'm downloading Gimp now....I'll be crossing my fingers...lol

The great thing is, it's regularly updated and gaining in popularity. I find it very natural to use, but then again I started with it before having a go with Photoshop! Usually the otherway around for most people! The pressure sensitivity with my Wacom pen is very sweet! Works with all Photoshop filters too!!

I'm all for something I don't have to fork out another £500 for the next upgrade! Hope you like it!

ps. If you have any desktop publishing to do, have a look at "Scribus", another Open Source package. This has been optimised for use with Gimp, has it's own little quirks, but is extremely powerful and doesn't install itself all over yer hard drive like Microsoft products!!

Crazywulf In reply to Thricelight [2009-08-22 07:45:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanx...will check Scribus it out...don't know if I'll be able to use Gimp though, my tiny screen on this Netbook wont allow me to see the bottom of the program, will have to see if I can adjust the screen on this thing.

Crazywulf In reply to arrestedinspace [2009-08-11 00:15:58 +0000 UTC]

Actually I am really into the idea of Ephemeral Art....when I see an old drawing of mine that is yellowed and curled I think it makes it look like an ancient document...I remember as a kid playing with stressing paper and dipping it in coffee to get that effect...and then burning the edges... I've always liked to see the process of decay on things I've made, when my Susu and I were first married I make edible art...so we made all these cakes and breads and things...it was pretty cool..... it could be rooted in my love of looking at dried leaves when I was a child...I'd sit in a pile of leaves and look at all the forms I'd see in each one, and once they'd start to decay, they would look much cooler....as you can tell, I was a pretty wierd kid...plus I'd wish humans would get the idea that anything is permanent short of God....everything we see around us will vanish, and this is not tragic...it's growth...it's beautiful..

arrestedinspace In reply to Crazywulf [2009-08-11 00:30:23 +0000 UTC]

much agreed. it's all a cycle. i STILL like stepping ever-so-slowly on dried leaves in the fall to hear them crunch

yeah these things like mold and cracks and other aging processes are fascinating and hold their own beauty.

u like andy goldsworthy? you should check him out... he is definitely one of my favorite artists of all time. he's all about ephemeral art

Typing paper is a bit too cheap for a real gallery. The paper yellows, is thin, etc. Arches hot press watercolor paper is quite nice. I agree about the Rapidographs, but they are tolerable if you use the Kohinoor Transmedia inks. Those are outstanding inks! If you're working digitally, you can print your works on the Arches paper using archival inks.

Keep in mind, Arches is also usually expensive compared to other papers. You have plenty of possibilities including bristol board, illustration board, and many other good papers. You can also save money ordering from aswexpress.com or dickblick.com

Crazywulf In reply to Torquinox [2009-08-11 12:59:54 +0000 UTC]

Money's not really the object...I have most of everything I need,(lol... with the exception of time...) I guess beyond the matter of me liking things to age, (though most of the paper I have is acid free anyway...so it wont yellow no mater how old it gets), It more of a semi-conscious protest against the wealthy snooty ppl I use to show with, I'd see them all walk up with their highly crappy pieces all professionally embalmed, matted and placed hermetically in their gold plated frames, tucked away in their tidy leather (Eddy Bauer? lol) portfolios, and snub some of the really good artists who were struggling just to afford paint and canvass... Myself personally have not had to put up with being a starving artist..I'd rather get a job than struggle..
There's a good chance you've been snubbed by these kind of ppl yourself. but maybe not, I'm sure you sell enough pieces to keep yourself well stocked...but I suspect you may have been on the recieving end of this at one time.

But ...I should just get over it.....if that's what the galleries want who am I to say otherwise...it's their business, and they're there to sell a product...er....Art....and if I don't like it all I have to do is set up an easel on the beach, and put out a hat to catch the coins....lol .

Torquinox In reply to Crazywulf [2009-08-11 14:47:55 +0000 UTC]

I can sort of understand the gallery position, but I'm not in love with the system. If there is a better way, I'll be the first in line. Snooty people don't interest me. Unfortunately, the art world may be more about social hierarchy than the work. I find, good materials often work better, hold up better, and let the work shine. I am not a big fan of framing work, either. I think people should see the work in its natural state. Still, I understand the need to protect fragile work and the desire for attractive presentation. All of this has combined to change my attitude about the work and my work methods. I may talk more about all that in my journal.
