Answer: This is the Drekavac (lit. The Screamer), the demonic soul of an unbaptized child, a creature used by parents to frighten children into good behaviour. Originating in South Slavic lore, few physical features are agreed upon in sightings. The one thing common to most stories is the piercing scream the beast makes. It sometimes appears dog-like, sometimes the form of a child and sometimes with kangaroo-like hindlegs. It goes by many names including drek, drekalo, ždrakavac, ždrekavac, zdrekavac, zrikavac, krekavac, cviljek, kukac, vriskavac and deravac.
