Description This is my entry for challenge 8 of the imginatecreate contest found here! fav.me/dbhe0c6
I wanted to present it as a double page spread in a newspaper, an advert selling one of the creatures. (I'm sorry if there are any spelling mistakes in the above piece! I was typing it in photoshop which doesn't have spellcheck hehe)

I'm so sorry I couldn't post it any bigger! anything of a larger size wasn't uploading on my internet...

The challenge was...

Challenge: Design a creature

Requirements:

  • Full body image of the creature
  • The size relevant to an average human

My personal traits were to design a creature with long fur, long ears and ram horns. The first thing that came to mind was long elf-type ears, but I wanted to go for something different, so I decided to have long rabbit ears instead. The ram horns grow out of the fungus on the creatures head which is used mainly for defence purposes.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SPECIES:
Evolution:
This creature evolved from rams and rabbits. This is clear in its anatomy. Its design features are due to them having to evolve to fit in with their entrionement, such as the rough textured skin, colour palette, and fungi on the head. The original Avic species before enchantment is a much more realistic rabbit in anatomy proportions, with small fungi and other plant life that grows in its fur which allows it to blend in with its environment. After being experimented on, the creatures became more humanoid with more human like qualities (read the newspaper extract for more information).

Lifestyle:
The Enchanted Avic was enchanted to be a versatile travelling companion. They are about to adapt to various weather conditions to help them survive. Despite this, they originate from the deep forests of the land. This environment is what they are mostly adapted to. Their colour palette allows them to blend in with the forest, and its speed allows it to escape from predators. This environment also gives them the greatest access to their food source. They are herbivores, feeding on mostly vegetation, though they do occasionally like to snack on the bugs that make habitat on the fungi on their head, mainly because they annoy them.
The Enchanted Avic are not preyed upon like the Avics are. Their more human-like intelligence allows them to avoid being preyed upon, especially with them usually travelling with a human companion. When they can, they will sleep in an Inn to avoid being pestered by the insects in foreign lands.

Defense:
This particular Enchanted Avic (Ulidra) carries around a stick that she uses as a staff. She easily loses her temper and can hit pretty hard with the stick if the need arises, but this is not the defence mechanism that the Enchanted Avic are supposed to use.
When they walk on all four legs, the incredible long fur that grows out of their back covers them entirely, almost making the creature look as if it belonged to another species (something that similarly resembles as Yak). The only thing that is visible is the top of the fungi and the ram horns that grow out of it. The patterns on the fungi often grow to resemble a face, tricking predators into thinking that this is the head of the animal. If predators then try to scratch and bite at the fungi, they will often become very ill (or possibly die if it's a small animal) from the poison within the mushroom.
The Enchanted Avics are also faster than regular Avics. They match the speed of a rabbit or a deer, allowing them to escape from preditors.

How this connects to my fantasy character (story of how Ulidra met my character):
I wasn't able to participate in the last challenge as I was on holiday, but I did make a quick character to provide a connection between this creature (who is to become his travelling companion) and my character.
The character I created is called Aurviour Black. His name and occupation are mentioned in the newspaper above. Aurviour is an elf. He found the first Enchanted Avic while on his travels completing the task he got set by the man he was working for as an apprentice Alchemist and herbologist. Unsure of what to do with the creature, he gave it to a trusted friend and researcher to work out what had been done to the creature. A few years later, the researcher got offered money in exchange for the findings of his research. The man that offered the money went by the name of Niveal. He became the founder of 'The Ancient Shelter Enchanted Avic Facility', believing that he saw profit in these strange beings.
For over 50 years, Aurviour worked to become an established travelling Alchemist, travelling from town to town to work his magic on run down Alchemy stores and returning the profession to what he had always hoped it would be as a child. One day, he gets offered to for the facility doing the enchantments on the Avics. He accepted the job, curious to see what had happened to the creature he had found.
When he got there, he saw the terrible conditions these creatures were being kept in. Immoral practices were being used to shape these beings into the perfect product that Niveal could sell for the highest price. Horrified by the sight, Aurviour left immediately, taking with him as many of the Enchanted Avics he could. After telling the local authorities and being dismissed as a story teller, He made plans to travel to the capital of the Kingdom and report it to the king himself, understanding he wouldn't be able to take down the facility on his own. On his way through, he released a lot of the Enchanted Avics back into their home environment, but one particular one wouldn't leave him alone.
Ulidra is determined to travel alongside him, helping in whatever way she can. She will rid the world of Niveal, even if she had to do it herself.

I hope you like my creature!
