Description The makeshift gingerbread house sat on the table. Tracie had cobbled it together out of graham crackers and a wide variety of candy pieces. Spree pieces decorated the front, while candy corn adorned the roof. Gum drops, a necessity for a gingerbread house, had been placed on the top and around the house; she had stuck pieces of candy cane on the sides of the house. What Tracie considered to be the centerpiece, however, were the sour patch kids whom she had placed as though they were walking into the house.

Despite the fact that the house was crooked and did not look like one of the box sets that her boyfriend had wanted her to buy, Tracie was pretty proud of what she had made. Just out of what I found in the cupboards, she thought. Imagine that!

As she turned her back on her creation to wash her hands and start doing the dishes, she heard a key turn in the lock and the front door open. "Hey, Eric!" she called out, not looking up from her task.

Eric took his boots off, wet and slushy with snow, before he walked into the kitchen. Although Tracie could not see his face, his expression slid from smiling to a look of distaste almost instantly. "What is this?" he asked accusingly.

"It's a gingerbread house," she replied, turning around. "What, you don't like it?"

Eric shrugged. "I dunno... well..."

"Come on, be honest." She was catching on.

"It's kind of ugly and looks like it's going to fall over," he blurted out. "You should have gotten the box set."

His girlfriend looked hurt and a little annoyed. "Oh, come on," she said. "It's still edible."

"Yeah, but it isn't even made of real gingerbread!" he complained.

Just then, the oven went off. Grabbing her oven mitts, Tracie opened it and brought out a tray of gingerbread men. "Here's your gingerbread," she said deviously.

He reached a hand out to grab one and she slapped it. "Do you really want to burn yourself?"

"Sorry..."

"And as for your comments about my gingerbread house..." She took a glob of frosting off of it and smeared it on her boyfriend's face.

"Hey!" Nevertheless, he wiped it off and licked his finger. "Hey, what kind of frosting is that?"

"Peanut butter. Your favorite if I recall."

He nodded. "You're not such a bad baker after all."

That's cute. I like how it's almost tragic at the beginning; this girl worked so hard and was so creative with it, and her makeshift house wasn't appreciated. But it's the care and the thought that goes into it that matters, and she kept him in mind even if he didn't keep her in mind. It's a suitable sweet little story with the most important things at heart. ^___^
