When do memes die? Is it when they're overused? Is it when the FCC/European Union pass certain laws that make doing anything on the Internet illegal? Or, like with mere humans, is it just the passage of time?

An Internet meme is an inside joke shared among people who understand its context, but the unfortunate paradox of the meme is that in order for one to become virally popular, it'll eventually be used outside of its niche context. You know that gif with all those kids crowding around that guy and going 'OHHHH!'? To me, the gif itself isn't the joke (as Family Guy and the advertizing industry seem to believe), it's how in the original video (youtu.be/4MywkLYCFyY ) it's an overreaction to some... um... non-traditional snaps. But as people spread it around it became a reaction to any kind of burn. And you know what, that's no bad thing - people originally not in on the joke have found a way to make it funny for them, giving the meme more popularity (I'm not the kind of person who uses 'normie' as a perjorative. Or at all). But it illustrates my point - eventually memes get spread to the point where we're given the punchline without the setup. Nobody's responsible for doing this, it just happens on its own. I guess the best we can do to keep memes active is to keep finding new and creative ways to use them, up until the point where they get forgotten about or used by Family Guy or the advertizing industry, which is effectively a death blow.

Anyway, here's a dead meme. I started 'working' on this back when the Just Monika meme was in its prime, but left it to rot when it reached the point where I didn't know how to go on without Photoshop (which I lacked at the time). Doki Doki Literature Club was the first of these UnderNights at Sansy's fandom-magnet games that I actively tried to avoid getting roped into. That may have had something to do with why I stopped working on it for a while. Another reason might have been that I can't draw. Or color. Or use Photoshop. Or do art of any kind. Or contribute to society in any meaningful way. Or look at myself in the mirror. Or consider myself anything more than the second most pathetic creature in the world. The first is Doki Doki Literature Club fans*.

Monika's date night didn't exactly go swimmingly. After disbanding the literature club and strangling no less than three of her fellow students, she's headed to the place where all fictional characters go to wet their whistles and vent their woes. It can be a thin gruel trying to get this whole 'human interaction' thing down to a fine art, particularly if you're the kind of person that uses the phrase 'human interaction'.
