Description These animals are all native (or seasonal visitors) to the California coast waters. There's a harbor seal, some leopard sharks, a leatherback sea turtle, a male California sheephead, a garibaldi, several sea stars, a halibut, a mola mola (or ocean sunfish), a jellyfish, and a bunch of little sardines.
My, my, look at all those copy/paste sardines. I only drew two of them. the rest were just pasted, re-sized and rotated. :/

I wanted to add more fish and maybe a sea otter, but I'm tired of this. I'll just call it "done".

I learned after finishing this: Seals close their nostrils while swimming. So, this seal is probably just a rebel or something...

The overall realism of the fauna in this image, and the beauty of the light coming through the water are spectacular. There is a one major problem with this image though, and that is the use of non-blue colours. This really stands out in the case of what I am going to call the goldfish. As you probably know, blue and orange are contrasting colours. This is the reason that that orange fish is easily the most striking and visible element in the image. There is also a minor case of this in the use of purple hues in the fish on the right, which stand out not due to contrast so much as to just being different. It isn't the use of the colour in itself that's the problem - in fact, it's actually quite pretty - but its the location of the colour within the composition which really hurts this beautiful image. I would suggest either widening the range of hues throughout the image, or simply shifting your orange and purple hues back to more blue ones. I make this suggestion based purely on the composition of the image, rather than on realistic portrayal of the fauna.

If you wanted to incorporate orangey tones, I would say that the seal would benefit from them most. Without the goldfish, the image would really lose a strong focal point, and adding hue contrast to the seal would help make it more of a focal point. Though it already does a rather good job due to tonal contrast. Experiment though. A single strong focal point works, but it is a little dull. It's just that at the moment, the goldfish looks a little too interesting, and maybe a bit out of place.

Other than this one issue of colour, however, I find this image to be stunning, beautiful and impressive. As I mentioned, the realism of the fish and the seal is, well, very realistic, and you've done a great job with the underwater effect. The indistinct blue forms in the background add a sense of depth to the image, and their scale and nature add majesty.

What if I were to add more colorful fish? Say a couple of little red ones and a green one under the seal, and one above it on the upper left?
I'll put a transparent layer of orange and purple over the seal sometime and see how it looks...

Sorry for the massively delayed reply. In response to your question, it may very well work. I can't really tell without seeing it, unfortunately. You've probably moved on to new canvases, but I felt too guilty to not reply ...

Late is better than never! I've been wanting to work on this one some more, bit I never get around to it. I think it would do well with more color. i'll try to keep it cool colors, though.

To be honest, my personal preference would be for a more unified palette rather than for a wider range of colour, but I'm curious to see how it turns out anyway

Oh wow, I love images that depict sea life, & this one is one of the best. Haha I almost missed the sunfish in the back. Would've been nice to see a jellyfish around here.
