The problem is that the new writers are basically intent on destroying their relationship and if I can hazard a guess to where this is headed killing off Wiccan.Β Billy and TeddyΒ are still together and the writers have already introduced a new love interest for teddy, including altering their entire back story so when Billy does die Teddy gets over it quickly and is ready to boink the new little homewrecker prodigy,Β a plot line of Loki stealing all of Billy's powers, a replacement for him on the team and only four more chapters. It's more like they started off the volume plotting to kill off Billy and just replace him.

At this point, I actually want them to kill off Billy. And I absolutely LOVE him; Iβve never connected with any other comic book character the way I connected with Billy! But Gillen's just driving everything that was great about his character and all the growth he went through in the first run straight into the ground. I'd rather see him die with a semi-salvageable personality now and maybe get resurrected by Heinburg (or someone else who can actually write well) 5-10 years down the line, than have him degrade any further in this new run.

Teddy is having a lot of doubts about their relationship because of something Loki said.
Loki suggested to Teddy that it was very... convenient that Billy found such a perfect boyfriend first time out and, given that Billy is a reality warper of extraordinary power, the implication is that Billy might have unknowingly altered reality so that Teddy was in love with him.
So now Teddy isn't sure whether their relationship is "real".

spitfiresdad16 In reply to Icon-UK [2013-07-17 03:00:30 +0000 UTC]
Ah. Now, if I were Teddy, I'd first consider the source: Loki, the Trickster! He's a lying, cheating, manipulating scumbag. Nothing he says should be taken seriously. He prays upon our insecurities for grins and giggles. Second, I'd reflect on my history with Billy. All the good times, and all the love I felt for him. Finally, I would sock Loki in the face and leave! XD

I have to say, I love this. The fourth panel though says so much. It's the thing that's been making me sad about the new run of Young Avengers. How distant they are and how awkward it's become. It's so sad to see how they were getting so far and then the new series has sort of ruined that. Sorry if I'm ranting about it.
Love your work!

What is awkward about them? In the first two issues they were far more intimate than they'd ever been in any prior comic
And is Teddy questioning things now? Yes. But they aren't awkward, and personally relationships ARE never as perfect as Billy and Teddy were portrayed. Gillen is treating them like a real couple.

xxSilverFallenxx In reply to babeandandy [2013-07-16 03:28:13 +0000 UTC]
I didn't mean that they were being an awkward couple, more so that just the feel of the new series is awkward. Billy's depression had ended in the last chapter of Children's Crusade and he was getting better, but then he was turned into this whiny, emo gay-kid. Teddy lost his ear-piercings. They both got 'fabulous' hair.Β
I merely meant that, reading the new series, it just feels off to me. That's mostly a personal opinion though. So I really meant that the series has gotten awkward and sad for me, and I feel like that's reflected in the piece.Β

I was prepared to comment on everything you said, but I realize that you are allowed to have you own opinion on the new YA... I completely love it and find myself loving Gillen's writing far more than Heinburg's, but you don't... That's okay
However I'm not cool with the 'fabulous' hair comment... Because it insinuates that there is something wrong with their hair in some sort of 'too gay' way...
Also... Their hair isn't even stereotypical to gay people to begin with... It's stereotypical to any young person living in NYC... Those hair styles are popular on straight and gay young men
π: 0 β©: 1
xxSilverFallenxx In reply to babeandandy [2013-07-16 03:52:38 +0000 UTC]
I love Gillen's writing as Loki. He definitely knows what he's doing with Loki. I just don't know if I like his writing with Teddy and Billy.
As someone who is part of the LGBT community in LA, I don't know too many straight guys with hair like Billy's (coming from a guy with hair down to his shoulders) or the tight clothing like Teddy's. XD (Might just be me missing their old designs though). My thing is, I feel like it has gone to a stereotype a bit with them. They lost a lot of their geekiness it feels like. But again, that's just my opinion. Maybe I need someone to smack some other idea into my head so I can better appreciate the new series.
π: 0 β©: 1
babeandandy In reply to xxSilverFallenxx [2013-07-16 04:11:05 +0000 UTC]
I don't find them stereotypical at all ... And to be honest in a lot of Heinburg's writing they felt more like best friends than boyfriends... And tons of straight guys wear tight clothing (and I live in the suburbs of Pittsburgh)... Any guy (gay or straight) with a ripped body is going to show it off... and actually, aside from his pajamas... Teddy hasn't been shown in clothing yet... Oh wait, just looked, he has civies on when they're at the club and his shirt is rather loose on him... So, I'm not sure what 'tight clothes' you are speaking of to be honest :\
I think Noh-Varr has tighter clothing xD (Not that I mind)
In the most recent issue, they geeked out over Prodigy... Personally it just seems like Gillen isn't forcing it with them... They haven't really had a reason to be Geeky up until now... Sure in the very first story arc, they kind of geeked out over meeting Iron-Man and Cap, and everyone else... But they know everyone now... Not as much opportunity for their inner fanboys to come out, haha
I guess for me I just like the new series so much because I feel like Gillen actually cares about character, and personality, and realistic human emotion.Β I never get that from comics... I feel like I'm reading a good Young Adult novel now.
π: 0 β©: 1
xxSilverFallenxx In reply to babeandandy [2013-07-17 04:24:50 +0000 UTC]
And why can't boyfriends be best friends as well? Because they are best friends too.Β
Okay, good point about a ripped guy showing it off.Β
...maybe I do need to re-read it. I thought he wore the shirtless purple tight-shirt most of the time. Or was it black with like a purple slit...? Umm, maybe I do need to re-read it.
Okay, true, Noh-Varr does wear a lot tighter clothing. XD
I haven't read the last two. x.x I haven't had the money, and my car is acting up. The only geeking I've seen so far was Game of Thrones, and Loki was the one to bring it up, really. (If anything, to me, they seem like they geek out about guys more. Though I did enjoy Teddy, Billy and Kate's messaging about Noh-Varr XD)
That's funny, because I see it the other way around. I think the original series had a lot more personality and human emotion than this one. This one seems so flat to me. Loki is up to no good. Ms. America is tough as balls. Noh-Varr likes to dance. Kate... I can't figure out what her trait is. Billy is whiny. And Teddy is perfect boyfriend. Unfortunately, that's all I'm seeing. =/ They all seem more like "teenagers" now and that's just kind of it. But that might just be because I'm almost done being a teenager, and don't consider myself a teen anymore.Β
Although, I do have to say, it's incredible how two people can read the same thing and see it in incredibly different ways.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
babeandandy In reply to xxSilverFallenxx [2013-07-20 04:36:46 +0000 UTC]
Haha... That Black and purple thing is Teddy's costume xD Not his clothing
And Superhero costumes tend to be tight
And I guess I'm just curious why it's such a big deal if they've matured passed overly geeking out about everything... And again, there hasn't been a reason for them to get excited... And it would be pretty stupid writing for Gillen to just throw in something for them to geek out over to appease all the fans demanding he prove they're still geeks, wouldn't it?Β And hell, even their little conversation about what Billy chooses to call Wanda had touches of geekiness, but without being over the top
Sorry, but all these issues just seem nitpicky and like an unwillingness to accept change (And I don't mean you personally, just the YA fanbase that gripes all over the internet about YA v2)... Young Avengers is a comic which means it will constantly be going through writings changes
Hell I saw some small group of people on tumblr who want to make something called the True Young Avengers Volume Two, and I couldn't help but get sick from the level of pretentiousness of that...
Okay... Sorry, putting angry!me away, because you aren't the people on tumblr that are so unwilling to change... You're actually having a civil dialogue :3
And yeah, haha
I guess we really do just get something completely different from it... I don't dislike Heinburg's writing of them, but none of them really stood out in my head much, aside from Billy and Teddy (and that was mostly because of all my imagining... not anything Heinburg actually wrote)
I don't need to pretend Billy and Teddy are intimate and in love with Gillen, I get to see that... To be honest re-reading old YA, and taking off my nostalgia goggles, they don't seem very in love to me... Probably the first time they actually read as a couple was in Wiccan and Speeds issue of Young Avengers presents, and that was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
π: 0 β©: 1
xxSilverFallenxx In reply to babeandandy [2013-07-20 20:36:45 +0000 UTC]
Okay, I definitely need to reread it, because I have definitely forgotten. XD I only remember that Billy wore a strange half-black half-white shirt.
...Yeeaaahhh... They really do...
There's nothing wrong with being geeky when you're older. I'm in college and I'm more geeky than I was in high school. XD I'm not demanding that they be the same level of geeky, I just have missed some of the geekiness (being a big geek myself).
I get that. I mean, I love how they've written Loki, I've liked meeting Noh-Varr and Miss America. Yes, I miss Patriot and Iron Lad, but I do like the new crew. Billy and Teddy just feel a bit off to me. Not so much that I'm going to drop Young Avengers (whereas some DC New 52 has been so horribly off with everything that I've dropped them out of disgust).
That's a little unfortunate though that so many fans really dislike the new series. It's still entertaining. I still consider it part of the Young Avengers run.
Some people on tumblr definitely are a little too angry and scary, so I get that. XD I don't see the point in yelling. Because yes, I recognize that you have a different opinion then me, but I respect your opinion and like seeing the other side of things. And you're having a civil dialogue too, so thank you. (Granted, we're spamming Cris a tiny bit. XD)
Well for Heinburg, I liked how subtle it was about Billy and Teddy's relationship. That's probably because I'm not into PDA, and neither were Billy and Teddy. So that's obviously personal opinion. I like it moer so when stuff is implied. I don't need to see a couple making out to know they're in love. I'm more into the romantic relationship than the physical one. But again, that's just me.
One thing that I'm torn about is the artists. I thought the artist with the first series had a very pretty style, but everyone looked slightly Asian (especially Billy), so I do appreciate how there's more variety in the new style. Though I do miss some of the pretty art.
π: 0 β©: 1
babeandandy In reply to xxSilverFallenxx [2013-07-20 22:19:23 +0000 UTC]
See Heinburg to me almost made it too subtle, and I'm not sure that they are really doing PDAs now, but we get to see them be intimate in private which is something I like... They are having equal treatment instead of being kept PG
And here is how I feel about Jim Cheung's art... He draws incredibly beautiful bodies, scenery, and huge battle scenes... But he isn't too good at faces... They had a tendency to look the same especially when you saw a lot of them on one panel... It was like you could swap their faces and they'd be the same xD ( this is an opinion I've always had, back to when I began reading YA 3
Years ago)
McKelvie's style is definitely less detailed, but he wins my vote because of his amazing spreads and how he draws emotions... I almost feel like his art is animated, I love it
Have you read the Young Avengers: Dark Reign tie-in? I love the art style in that

xxSilverFallenxx In reply to babeandandy [2013-07-22 23:07:20 +0000 UTC]
Well I think the thing with Heinburg is that he wasn't sure what he was doing. Originally, Teddy was going to be a girl (from what I heard) who shape-shifted, and Billy was going to be bi. But they eventually did decide to made Teddy a guy and test the waters with a gay super-hero couple, because the only other major gay superhero I can think of is Northstar, and his X-Men wedding didn't exactly go over well. So Heinburg was being cautious. But now that Gillen knows people approve of Teddy and Billy, he can play with it more and play it up more.Β
I definitely agree on that. All of the faces were far too similar, but everything else was beautiful. Granted, I did appreciate the fact that Billy and Tommy actually did look alike and you could mistake them if it wasn't for their hair. (Granted, I haven't read the new #6 yet, so I'm not saying anything against the current artist, my point is I've read/seen a lot of characters were someone will say "Oh they look just like so-and-so" and not see it at all.)Β
I agree that he does emotions well and it looks animated. Some of the facial expressions Loki makes are wonderful. I'm just used to seeing Loki in Journey into Mystery, where the art style is so much like a painting, that it was a bit of a shock to see it more animation style.Β
Is that the one where the other people pretend to be Young Avengers and the one guy has the power to blow people up? (And the cover had some chick not wearing much hanging off of Billy?) Because if that is it, yes I have read it. A long time ago though.Β
It is definitely interesting to see all of the different artistic renditions of the Young Avengers though (mostly Billy and Teddy since they really are the only two to survive the entire time on the team. XD)

babeandandy In reply to xxSilverFallenxx [2013-07-24 03:17:55 +0000 UTC]
The Northstar wedding happened a year ago, YA was created in 2005, I'm not sure what you're trying to say, ^^'' (But yeah, I know that Teddy was going to be a girl and Heinburg was originally debating dealing with trans issues)
And I never heard the wedding went over badly?Β The issue sold out, the Astonishing X-men series was doing well for a while, until the writer started sucking... Seriously she went from making me very interested to the point that I don't buy it anymore... But the wedding definitely did not go over badly... They made the Astonishing X-men Annual (which came out like 8 months after the wedding) all about Northstar and his husband, so clearly it went well for them to focus on it again
(My biggest issue with the wedding was just from a writing stand point, it happened insanely fast, like in 3 issues they were engaged and married haha)
Well, remember issue 6 is drawn by a guest artist, not McKelvie, we have yet to really see how McKelvie will draw Tommy
On a little tangent, I'm glad to know you think they are meant to look alike! Because there are some fans who must not realize that.Β I see Young Avengers movie fancasts, and they always cast two different people to play Billy and Tommy, and they don't even look all that similar.Β I'm always like, um people... They are supposed to be Wanda's identical twins, cast the same actor to play both
Yep and yep, and you mean Melter... I love Melter and I really wanted him to come back and get help controlling his powers, because he didn't want to be evil and hurt people... But then someone got a hold of him and started using him in Iron-Man (this was before Gillen started writing Iron-Man) and Melter went from this confused teen who didn't want to be evil, to an asshole destroying LA and calling Tony Stark a faggot and I was just like OH MY GOD Editors! You need to tell writers to keep the characters in character... to some degree!
And I was always confused by the whole Enchantress/Wiccan scene... She insinuates that she is going to use her enchanting power on him for sex... But then like... It's never brought up again... So every time I read it I wonder Did she use magic to fuck him? (In essence rape him) or did she not?
Don't forget KATE!!!
π: 0 β©: 1
xxSilverFallenxx In reply to babeandandy [2013-07-24 05:09:20 +0000 UTC]
But Northstar has been gayer longer than that. And my point was that there really are no gay super characters, especially when YA came out. My point is, most people who read comics are straight men who are homophobic, so I think Heinburg was worried about making gay characters and the backlash he would get for it, so that's why he made it very subtle and mellow. However, Gillen knows that fans enjoy Teddy and Billy as a couple, so he can do more with them. That was my point.Β
Oh really? Because at the comic book store I go to, they couldn't get rid of the wedding issue and literally gave them away for free during Free Comic Book May (they made a month event out of it instead of a day) and there were also a lot of copies in the boxes of back issues that they were selling for super cheap to try and get rid of them. =/ I haven't read the X-Men series so far. I have the wedding issue and the one before it, but that's it.Β
(Well then. Fastest planned wedding ever, I'd say.)
Oh is it? I haven't picked up 6 yet. I'm curious to see how McKelvie draws Tommy.
I've seen that too! It bugs me so much! The whole point is if it wasn't for their hair colour, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Fancasts really need to realize that unless you can find identical twins (like they did with the the Weasley Twins for HP) you cast the same person for both characters.Β
Right, right. See, I made the mistake of reading that before the original YA series. XD I was so confused. And really thrown off by the girl hanging off of Billy's arm. Seriously, that bothered me as the cover for the paper-back.Β
Hey, that's better than "I'm the goddamn Batman!". (But not really. Both are bad.)
Oh I know, that bugged me too. Especially considering that Billy is completely gay. It would rape no matter what. That part really made me uncomfortable.Β
Kate hasn't been part of the team since the VERY beginning though. She joined a tad bit later. But I would never forget Kate. She's fantastic. (And I love that she's also in Hawkeye.)
π: 0 β©: 1
babeandandy In reply to xxSilverFallenxx [2013-07-24 13:07:25 +0000 UTC]
Maybe your comic store just stupidly over ordered them... But no it didn't sell badly, because like I said if the wedding issue hadn't done well I'm certain Marvel would not have dedicated the annual (which is double the size) to Northstar and the fact the he is gay. xD
Well I mean the cover never really bothered me... Covers are never ever trustworthy, so that I was just kind of like *shrug* whatever.Β It was once I read the issue and Sylvie was coming on to Billy, and Billy was like "Erm... You know I'm gay right? And have a boyfriend?"Β And then she says (in close), "I know, that doesn't matter for me."Β
...
AND THEN IT'S NEVER BROUGHT UP AGAIN
Part of me wonders if the writer wanted to have her rape him (of course they wouldn't call it rape because y'know... Men can't be raped by women in this culture) but the higher ups said No way! However he did leave in that one page and made it ambiguous *shrug*
... she joined in issue 2 xP
You said that you liked seeing different artists drawing them, and well she's been around for every artist lol
