I swear there is NO editing here! (well, I won't lie, I cut the image to make it square).
I was preparing myself for a photoshoot, and after I painted one eye and put one of the contact lenses, I was like, 'woah, makes a difference'. Had never really realized until now. Pale perfect skin, blue feline eye, big lips. And then freckled face, brown eye, no eyelashes.
Bam, cleaned my right side and took a picture. Sweet.
Just look at what make-up can do.
Me gusta.

I instantly got caught by this photo. There is not much to criticize. Most things have been said. I only gave 3 stars fΓΌr originality because the half/half-face is something I have seen fairly often. But I believe that the point of vision, which I regard as the message, has been neglected a little:
I love this photo not only for its aesthetics and so on but also what can bee seen. The duality of beauty shown in it and the discussion following it in the comments. Both sides are equal in terms of "quality", as far as you can use this term in the very subjective context of beauty but their style is so very different. It is not easy to decide whether a face with make up or a natural one is more beautiful. And although I really looked at it for quite a while, I came to no general result but the one that natural faces often look warmer. It really is apples and pears..
Personally I have never thought about it that way until I tried to figure out what to think of this picture. I have no idea if you ever intended to give that incentive but in my understanding you earn 5 stars for vision anyway.

This piece is too perfect .
First i would like to say that the girl looks equally, if not more , beautiful without make up to with make up.
The look in her eyes is amazing and soul catching , from the serious breath taking blue with the dark perfectly done eye line to the mysterious clean kind brown.
The light " poudre " on the " touched " part of her face makes her look quite deep and mysterious , like she doesn't want anyone to get under that her skin and figure her out , on the other hand the lack of any substance on the untouched part of her face shows that she is not afraid of showing what she is made of even with the presence of the flaws .
Her lips are beautiful , the part that is covered with the dark red makes her look like a woman who can have a man and keep him , the other part of her lips makes her sound as innocent as a small girl can be but as tough as a mother protecting her child.
The neck bones are beautiful , even if they're not shown a lot , they show toughness and firmness.
With the hair pulled back tightly i'd say she's a woman that no man should mess with , specially if she was without make up.

Looking at this image, It spurs a very strong emotional response. I can almost literally put myself in the same position and it reminds me of all the years I've spent looking in the mirror at all my freckles at the dark lines under my eyes from insomnia and all my "mistakes". Then I would just throw on some make up but the "mistakes" never really went away. I admire the boldness of you taking a look and going "hey this is really different" and capturing the real you with the made-up you. Admittedly, that is really gutsy. Excellent job.
As far as the actual image goes, the pose id good, exposed and almost fragile seeming. The cropping is good, a bit dead center but it's a strong enough image to withstand that. I even like the focal length, forcing focus on the face and the extreme difference between what is real and made-up, while letting the neck and collarbones and even a bit of the jawline fall out of focus a bit giving a somewhat surreal effect.
Overall, Excellent job, I know I've seen similar images, but none quite so striking. I wish the best for you!

your "mistakes" are subjective
through acceptance and self-love, dissolved from a judgemental mind, they don't exist
just some food for thought...

Wow ! First it shows how makeup can change who you are in seconds, henceforth creating an entirely new persona. I believe you look beautiful with and without make up. Another of my favorite parts of this is the focus on your face and not on the background which brings out your eyes and lovely head. Good job and I hope to see another one of these masterpieces againg.
Still amaze me everyday with your skill and beauty with a camera and some makeup. You have touched my heart and have showed me that beauty comes in many shapes and forms.
Sincerely, Danny

Oh my! Let me just start by saying you are very beautiful- But when I saw this, I felt an actual physical movement in my chest- probably because in what usually takes lots of therapy and conviction in a person's life, you were able to capture mortality as well as what it means to be truly lovely. It's hard to convince any woman that she looks pretty without all the powdery riff-raff~ but it takes a good look in the mirror to make any individual feel insufficient about themselves. Make-up can add beauty but it also leaves room for self-resentment; all things that can be overlooked when you've grown wise enough (and hopefully confident enough) to be more than satisfied with yourself. Excellent photograph, again!

This is a really great picture, no doubt. It helps a lot that you are a really beautiful woman, makeup or no makeup. But I don't like that your face is a bit blurry. From what you say, you just took it in the spur of the moment, and no can do then, but it's still a shame. That's why I give you pretty low on the technique and vision.
I'm gonna be perfectly honest, and say that I *have* seen similar pictures before. But this still strikes me as something I haven't seen before, because usually the difference between before/after is a little bit too extreme. That of course just shows how big a difference makeup can make, but it doesn't really sink in. It just makes you think "oh, wow, someone's good at makeup.", not "hey, everyone would look very different with makeup!".
Your picture has an unusually high impact, because it shows how image and look changes with just some makeup.

the unimportant places in the face are indeed blurry β cheeks and hairβ¦ it is this dept of field blur (aperture 1.4 ) which underlines the picture's atmosphere, makes it even more striking. the eyes and upper lip are perfectly sharp. wouldn't call this a shame but great knowledge of photography.
the other question is: are blurry photos less beautiful than sharp ones? depends on taste, i believe.

Phantomet In reply to Binne [2012-05-10 18:29:40 +0000 UTC]
you are right, it does depend on personal preference, but I didn't like it and decided to say so .
For me it had a kind of "clinic" atmosphere, with chilly colors which made the contrasting red lipstick stand out. Then there was a whole bunch of contrasts between makeup/no makeup. I thought there was too many contrasts with the sharp/blurry too. It's a pretty simple portrait after all

This picture represents how beauty is so simple and how we can enhance our beauty. But this picture represents how we can be simple and beautiful at the same time. I love how the light hits her face and she's so beautiful. Her eyes are so intense and so gorgeous. It's like she's staring into my soul. I really prefer her without makeup, she seems more approachable and friendly, whereas with the makeup she looks like a high class model and very intimidating, but still fierce. This photo really caught my eye. Well done, and keep up the good work e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

The piece 'damn make-up' is worth so much for so many reasons.
Though the half-makeup look is not the most original idea, the method in which Senju-HiMe approached it is fantastic because of the incredible difference that can be seen from the left side of the face to the right. Other attempts at this look fall short of the magnificence of this one because it's a simple eyeshadow change with lipstick as compared to all the changes one can clearly see here.
Both sides possess not only completely different appearances but seemingly different personalities, tempting the viewer to reflect on how their judgement made on someone's appearance can shape how they perceive that person's personality to be like. Maybe it's wrong, maybe it's not- I think it's just part of how we've evolved and it's impossible not to judge based on appearance. What matters is how you judge them.
Overall, this is a brilliant piece of photography and artwork that deserves the best.

Amazing picture, but there are a few problems.
The head looks blown up because of the camera being too close, which can be solved by having it further away and zooming in.
Including the hair in the idea would have a great effect, even if it would be very difficult.
Grey backgrounds are horrible, a dark shade of rose would have been better, with the possible modification of having only the left side grey.
The light reflecting off the pupils is a bit square.
And, last and second least, the lipstick should be divided better.
And this text is just here to meet the minimum.

Stunning. I absolutely love the message that you have in this photograph. It says so much in such a simple way, but it gives the viewer an incredibly strong feeling. I love your expression and how it adds so much to the atmosphere of this piece. I also like that you have your hair pulled back so that we can fully and completely see your face and the differences between the sides.
There's really only one thing about this that I found a bit odd: your top and bottom lips, on the colored side, don't totally match up. But that is only one small thing, and I probably just noticed it because I was admiring this picture for so long.
Overall, I think the photograph is quite powerful, and the idea is beautifully executed. By the way, you're beautiful with and without makeup. I hope to see more photography like this in the future; keep up the good work.

This is just my personal opinion, I've never liked makeup in my life and still don't, as I believe whatever you look like without any masks is who you truly are and it shows how much of a beautiful person you are when your not hiding yourself.

Absolutely gorgeous. It's so sentimental to me because of each little 'flaw' a person may think they have, contradicting itself when another compliments it by someone complimenting it. It's like when I say 'oh god my brown eyes are so horrid' and then someone saying 'I love chocolate brown eyes, they're so beautiful!'.

It is an amazing picture but I have to be honest, I like the unpainted face better.
The makeup hides the beautiful texture of the skin, the defining freckles that are like no one else's (like a fingerprint of the face) and the natural color variations in the skin now hide behind false flesh.
The contact has removed the naturally beautiful brown of your eye and reactions that the eye has to what it sees or what you are feeling. Brown eyes are gorgeous if you take the time to look at just how much color they have; something no manufacturer could ever hope to reproduce and the dark coloring around the eye distorts it wonderful natural shape.Β
The lips no longer show their emotion; now hidden behind lipstick. A woman's lips can tell a man so much about what they are feeling if you watch them carefully. Lips will almost blush when she is happy or flush clean of color when upset-ted.Β
Make up hides more than just the natural beauty in a woman's face; it hides her emotions.Β

ugh i'm gonna throw up i hate large lips with that kind of lipstick (As is how the red contrasts and brings out the lips more to make it look like a big feature) To be honest i'm neutral about either side since i'm not that into these types of things but yea i can see what make up does. I don't mind small bits like just eyeliner or a bit of shadow but anything beyond that is ugh kill me (well i say that but...). I don't mind when BVB wears it tho or a band like that cuz i'm just like that ... This comment makes no sense probably...
