Do you use any shape-blends in illustrator or are you actually creating shapes for each tone of color?

I tried with blends but it doesn't give you exactly what you want, so i understand why you do it.
But it's a pain in the... and you manage to do it so damn clean!

yeah the blending tool is hard to control, I just use it to make those dress I did in some works.
