Honestly, and I know this sounds like a line, but it's all practice. I started out tracing and using drawing books to draw characters that already existed. I moved on to figure drawing and all this helped me learn anatomy. References are extremely helpful. I practice the things I am not as good at. I draw a little bit each day for practice.
