Description I'm finished with this, more or less. I may end up going back and adding a bit more detail to the background eventually, but for now, I'll let it be. I'm really happy about the way I painted the skin. It took SO MUCH TIME. But it was totes worth it ^_^ (I'm upset... I don't know why I painted this on a relatively small canvas.... That's so unlike me.)

As an explanation behind this.... XTimeLordessX made me do it Lol, jk. She and I were character chatting, and a trip to the bathhouse ensued. I couldn't deny her the lovely fanservice, could I?

Izrekiel from my webcomic Callous.

To I would love help learning how to blend the figure into his environment, so that he looks integrated into the space. Also, any help with the background and water in general would be very much appreciated. And I'm also struggling with how to make his skin and hair look wet.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

[UPDATE:]

I went back and messed with color levels, and added reflected light from the water to his skin, but mostly, I focused on trying to improve the light source. I'll probably go back and add more detail to the background later.

Thank you for your critique! I don't necessarily agree with all of your comments (as an artist, I hardly agree with every comment made about my work), but several of them were very helpful. I shall consider your words when going back and editing this work, and when I move forward. Thank you again!

Hello there, I saw your artwork in the Improvement Club's Correct Me folder, and came here to give a critique. I am not the group's corrector, and actually a new member to it.

However, I have made a new group which might be suitable for what I want to do:

You could submit some of your artworks there too.

Now, lemme write up a critique. One moment...

That skin is really good owo Daaayum those abs.

I'll try and help you out with the things you listed in your description;

To help with your characters looking integrated into the space, it really helps when your piece is coherent. This piece isn't perfect, and it compositionally isn't your best (But the damn shading on Izrekiel is damn amazing). To make it looks like it all fits together there are a few things you can do. The first and easiest one would be to identify a definite lightsource. In this im not really sure where the light is coming from. It looks like its coming from the left but that is only translated through the highlights on Izrekiel and the wood in the background. The water isn't reflecting or absorbing any of the light.

A second way to make your figure blend into the environment is to paint the environment in a similar way to the character so that the two don't contrast to heavily. Izrekiel is done beautifully, but the water and the background still seem kind of unfinished. The visible hard lines in the water and the wood contrast with his figure. They also kind of draw attention away from Izrekiel himself. The last thing the might help is a more noticeable reflection of Izrekiel in the water, since water reflects a lot especially in light environments.

For the water, that is kind of tricky. You have to understand how water acts. Light travels pretty easily into water, so there are a lot of light blotches in water, especially when its in a shallow pool. Water also wouldn't be still that it would create a straight line across the board at the back of the bath. You could probably also see some more of the towel through the water itself.

To make his skin look wet, it is kind of hard to portray that from such a distance (Especially if you used a small canvas like you said). When it comes to hair though, wet hair usually clumps together, but it is also usually really stringy and unpredictable. If you made a layer above the lineart, and just drew some thin hair lines overtop of it, you could portray the hair being wet that way. Wet hair also is darker than dry hair, but also reflects more light as well.

There is just one more thing I want to add though, and that is that this piece feels really... empty. Maybe its the lack clean detail besides Izrekiel, but to me it just feels really empty owo

I hope this helps!
Feel free to ignore me if you diagree with any of this

Cronaj In reply to SleepySoren [2016-06-07 05:06:04 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... The light source is from behind, which is why it's a bit confusing. :/ I have to figure out how the water would catch the light. Water is relatively transparent, like glass, but since it is unsteady and ever-changing, light won't pass though it the same way. Water is confusing O.o

I agree that the background isn't too refined. That's partly because there isn't much going on in the image besides water and steam. I'm trying to figure out what I can do to make it look less "empty." I had the idea to have some stone or brick surface connecting the wooden deck to the pool, like a wall underneath the deck where the water laps against the side, but I didn't know how to draw it, haha. And I also wanted to pot a bamboo pipe where the water flows into the pool from the natural springs. I could also put a window high in the left corner behind him to show the light source more clearly. All possibilities, but extremely difficult to pull off now, lol.

As for the wet hair, I'm a bit confused. :/ I did make the hair darker than his hair normally is. But there is no lineart, and I don't see how drawing thin lines over it would be helpful. I don't know what you mean in that regard, haha.

All in all, thanks for the help Lol, I wish I had you to stand over my shoulder as I draw sometimes, so that you can stop me from making bad decisions all the time >.<

SleepySoren In reply to Cronaj [2016-06-07 06:37:46 +0000 UTC]

If the light source is behind him, than I don't think his front would be as illuminated
With the water moving, that makes it even more fun cause than you get to draw all of that distorted light xD

I feel like an inside bathhouse is kind of hard to make it look interesting when you're doing just the basics. I thought you were doing an outdoor bathhouse, bad you could've done like rocks and piece of foliage and stuff xD

I took it upon myself to go and do what I meant to just show you. Basically I just made a layer overtop of the painting (I thought you had lineart sorry XD) and I just did a bunch of really bright (pretty much white) lines and random directions to kind of make it look more unkept and reflective to translate wet hair.  Klag

No please don't wish for that xD I would feel so bad being like "So.. wheres the light coming from?" that I just wouldn't say anything else. Gosh im such a nag.

Cronaj In reply to SleepySoren [2016-06-07 17:42:53 +0000 UTC]

I was mostly going off of a reference, so the light source might look weird because in the photo, the figure was outside... But I definitely think it would be cool to show the reflected light of the water bouncing around on his skin.

Hmmm... For the loose strands (that's what you meant!) I've found that when my own hair is wet, there are less of them. I might just have to make his hair look shinier instead. :/

My mom does that, but she doesn't really like anime. And I feel like she judges me so hard when I draw.

My mom: "So... Sabrina.............................." (uncomfortably long pause) "Why are you drawing a man bathing? Why?"

Me: "Uh......?"

My mom: "You better make sure you draw that towel up higher. He's practically naked. No, not high enough. I can still see his pecs!"

Me: "Okay?"

My mom: "Much better.... On second thought... He has no facial hair. He's practically naked..."

Me:

Grrrrrrrrr! I can never seem to do anything right! It doesn't matter how long I spend on a piece, or how many references I use, or what my inspiration is, it always looks like shit regardless. T^T

SleepySoren In reply to Cronaj [2016-06-07 17:47:02 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense

Haha im not really sure what to say than owo Maybe the strands just make it look messier? Cause my hair always seems kind of chaotic and messy after a shower/bath, especially hwen it starts to dry.

My mom and brother use to do that too me too ;w;

Don't be like that! You're art is lovely! Especially your figures and characters, there done amazingly well. Your backgrounds just fall short in amazingness.

Cronaj In reply to SleepySoren [2016-06-08 18:47:21 +0000 UTC]

Lol, maybe I'm the weird one then. My hair looks perfect after I shower. It's when it starts to dry that I'm faced with issues.

>.< I'll go back into this piece when I have inspiration. Right now, I'm devoid of motivation and ideas...

SleepySoren In reply to Cronaj [2016-06-08 20:29:52 +0000 UTC]

Maybe it's because you're hair is so short? xD Or your hair is just purrfect.

Maybe you should just start some new pieces? owo you know, spark the flames of motivation in your heart once more.

Well, my hair did the same when it was long (and I mean reaaaaaally long), and my hair is certainly not perfect. *shrug* One of the mysteries of the world, it seems.

Maybe. I have commissions to work on. Maybe that'll help me out of my rut

SleepySoren In reply to Cronaj [2016-06-12 06:37:58 +0000 UTC]

I just felt like I'd never get better and that I was a terrible artist. It was really depressing, every time I went to draw something I'd usually just throw it away. I was really close to just selling my tablet at the beginning of last year.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cronaj In reply to SleepySoren [2016-06-12 17:39:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah... I feel that way some times. Quite often actually. But I enjoy drawing too much to give it up. Even when I'm at my worst and feel like I can't achieve anything, I still draw. It calms me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SleepySoren In reply to Cronaj [2016-06-12 17:53:36 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, during that time it was just soul crushing that giving it up felt like it would make me happier. I'd have more time to play games, spend time with friends, and do other things. Eventually I got over it though. Like I don't feel that way anymore, but to get to that point was a lot of thinking and kind of trying to figure out why I wanted to draw in the ifrst place.

Cronaj In reply to SleepySoren [2016-06-12 18:31:40 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... I guess... I never thought about why I wanted to draw. I simply knew that I must.

SleepySoren In reply to Cronaj [2016-06-12 18:41:46 +0000 UTC]

I never thought I must. It just always been something I've really enjoyed doing. I don't think I'll ever be amazing or be a popular artist, I've already accepted that. But I get really irritable when I haven't drawn for more than a day or two.

Maybe, but I don't think its a bad goal to have. Especially if you're drawing a comic. You're bound to make someone happy, sad, excited etc, if they really enjoy your story.
